CRPL 463/863 Land Use and Transportation Planning
Instructor: Prof. Abigail Cochran, Ph.D.
When: Fall 2024, Wednesdays, 12:15pm-3:00pm
Transportation systems facilitate the most fundamental opportunities of urban living. These networks connect people and places, and are vital to the social and economic development of cities. In this course, students will engage with the complex puzzle of transportation and land use. They will learn how transportation has historically shaped cities, and critically examine the changing role of transportation in the digital age—characterized by an increased reliance on information and communications technologies that allow people and objects to connect, and cities to function, in new ways. Students will be challenged to contemplate how transportation affects urbanity on the macro-scale of the built environment, and on the micro-scale of people’s day-to-day. They will learn the fundamentals of transportation planning and policymaking in theory and practice, and wrestle with contemporary issues in transportation, including social equity, environmental justice, and mobility in “smart cities.”
