Title: Classroom to Clinic – Collaborating to co-create new healthcare technologies
Abstract: Every one of the world’s 7.7 billion people needs healthcare. The challenges presented by the aims of providing higher quality, more efficient and accessible care offer rich, engaging opportunities for teaching, research and entrepreneurship. Dr. Hanumara will present his experiences blending teaching, research and entrepreneurship through the MIT Medical Device Design class. For over a decade this course has brought together engineers, clinicians and industry to become a vehicle for fast-paced prototyping and evaluation of solutions to real clinical needs. It has resulted in papers, graduate research project, collaborations, and even a few startups. This seminar will further discuss industry trends and the challenges in translating a clinical need to a technology to a business.
Bio: Dr. Hanumara, a researcher and educator at MIT in the Mechanical Engineering Department co-teaches MIT’s Medical Device Design course, mentoring students as they prototype technologies in close collaboration with clinicians and companies. His work bridges healthcare innovation and human-centered design.
