Title: Driver Compliance and Safety Impacts of Advanced Warning Systems in Nebraska
Abstract: Advanced Warning System (AWS) technologies are designed to provide timely alerts to drivers about upcoming hazards, work zones, and traffic conditions, thereby enabling safer driving responses and reducing crash risk. This presentation discusses various types of AWS technologies implemented in Nebraska to enhance driver compliance and safety performance. The focus is on several scenarios, such as high-speed signalized intersections and high-speed work zones, where AWS technologies have been evaluated through research projects funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT). Measures of compliance, such as speed reduction and variation, were examined, along with surrogate safety indicators including headway time and conflict occurrence.
