Title: In Situ Recovery of Fermentation Products: Process Intensification and Scale-Up
Abstract: Integrated bioprocesses offer a promising pathway toward efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable production of biobased chemicals; however, downstream separation remains a major technical and economic bottleneck. This seminar highlights in situ product recovery (ISPR) as an emerging strategy that integrates separation directly into fermentation to address these challenges. By continuously removing inhibitory products, ISPR alleviates product toxicity, enhances productivity and yield, and enables intensified or continuous operation. We will present recent advances in ISPR process development, intensification, and scale-up, with a particular emphasis on pilot-scale demonstrations using a fully automated integrated bioprocess. Together, these advances illustrate how bioseparation can be transformed from a downstream limitation into a driving force for sustainable and commercially viable biorefineries.
