Get inside – Garage parking spots still available

Fall weather is nice, but cold and snow will arrive in full force. At the end of your day, you will have to scrape your windshield and face the wind chill. There is another option: Get a campus garage parking permit.

A limited number of garage permits are still available for students, faculty and staff. Permits for Parking & Transit Services garages on the downtown campus only cost an additional $5.00 a month for faculty and staff and $9.00 a month more than standard surface parking permits for students.

The garage permit is also valid for parking at designated lots on East Campus and Nebraska Innovation Campus. (NOTE: Student and employee garage commuter permits are not authorized in designated areas during home football games.)

To upgrade your current parking permit or buy a new garage permit, contact Parking and Transit Services at 625 Stadium Drive, Suite A, or order online at http://parking.unl.edu/parking

Check out online bus tracking tools

No more standing at the stop and asking “Where’s the bus?” The University and StarTran now offer online tools to track campus busses in real time.

An interactive map, available on the Parking and Transit Services website, shows real time GPS bus locations. This map can be viewed from your desktop or mobile device. Select the purple bus icon at the bottom of the map for current information.

The StarTran ‘Get On Board’ app is a free download that tracks bus location and provides estimated time of arrival at your stop.

Zipcar: wheels when you want them

For the times you need a car – but don’t have one, turn to Zipcar.

Zipcar is a member-based car sharing option, available on campus. With Zipcar, students can join as members and can reserve a vehicle by the hour or day.

Zipcar offers benefits to members:
• Share vehicle and cost with other Zipcar users.
• Reserve a vehicle for hours or a day with a mobile app.
• Receive a Zipcard to unlock assigned Zipcar vehicles.
• Gas and insurance are included in the membership.

A closer look: Special Events provides services, support for UNL hosts and guests

The Special Events team with Parking and Transit Services has clear goals.

“We want to ensure our customers get everything they need for the success of their event in terms of their parking needs,” said Ron Fuller, Transit and Special Events coordinator. “We also work to ensure that regular UNL operations are not disrupted by the special event.”

Special Events Parking offers a full set of resources for events held on the UNL campuses, to make sure participants can park and attend events easily. These events include conferences, workshops, athletic events, recruiting and admissions, plus new student enrollment. Guests include professional partners, fans, future students and their parents.

“Depending on the size, location and timing of the event, we can designate parking areas and provide permits; allocate garage spaces with permits for participants; or coordinate buses for transporting to the event site,” Fuller said. “We have a variety of options for busing, depending on the distance and number of guests to deliver.”

Costs for these services are paid by the hosting UNL department or organization.

“We are focused on customer service,” Fuller said. “We want people to have their parking and transit needs met, with great customer service at a reasonable rate.”

Fuller urges event organizers to contact the Special Events team early in the planning process. “We can help ensure guests have a positive introduction and good experience navigating the UNL campus,” he said.

The biggest crowds include UNL athletic events, especially football game days.

“We do have on campus parking available for fans,” Fuller said. “Parking spots in lots and garages can be reserved in advance for the full season or individual game. The cost – only $20 per game day.”

Details on available services, costs and contact information are available on the website http://parking.unl.edu/special-events-parking
