Be ready: Know winter parking rules for Lincoln streets
It’s November in Nebraska and we know the future forecast: snow and winter storms.
If you park your vehicle on a city street, it is import to understand the City of Lincoln Snow Plan rules. They include levels of parking bans on city streets.
Based on the severity of the storm, the city can declare a snow emergency with parking banned on emergency snow routes, arterial streets and city bus routes. In snow removal districts, varying parking restrictions can be declared. Additional rules can apply to residential areas. The city provides maps and details on their website http://lincoln.ne.gov/city/pworks/engine/traffic/snow/#s
Be aware: Streets adjacent to the East, Downtown and Innovation campuses are official Lincoln streets, and these rules will apply, as they will for City streets that run through Downtown campus that are maintained by the city, including 14th Street, 16th Street, 17th Street, Vine Street, W Street and Stadium Drive.
On East campus, streets within campus boundaries are maintained by UNL.
Lincoln also offers email alerts and Twitter access to the latest street and parking information.
Add these to your winter online resources, available at

Safe driving is always good idea, especially in parking lots and garages
It may seem simple to drive through a parking lot or garage, but it is important to stay alert and drive safely. Reports indicate that drivers are speeding in parking areas, creating dangerous intersections and entrances.
The number of reported accidents during the past fiscal year reflects these problems. Vehicle accidents include: parking lots – 75 accidents; parking garages – 48 accidents; for a campus total of 123 accidents
“It may seem like parking lots and garages should not be likely places for accidents,” said Dan Carpenter, director, Parking and Transit Services. “Unfortunately, we have frequent reports of collisions.”
In the event of a collision, campus police are contacted and tickets can be issued.
“We remind you to drive slowly, signal turns and watch for cars entering or backing into your driving lane,” said Carpenter.

Occasional Parking Permit provides flexibility
The Occasional Parking Permit offers flexibility to meet your campus access needs. It provides ten single day parking permits, and you chose the days.
On the day you want to park on campus, peel off the covering for that date and display the permit in your vehicle. Faculty, staff and students may purchase these for Area A and Area C lots. They cannot be used on home football game days.
Each ten day packet costs $40 and is available at the Parking and Transit Services office. For complete details, http://parking.unl.edu/special-permits#occasional-permit
