OLLI at UNL to Host Open House on Sunday, Aug 20

Curiosity never retires when you join the Osher Lifelong Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, also known as “OLLI at UNL.” OLLI at UNL will host a free open house Sunday, August 20, 2017 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the downtown Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel, 333 S. 13th St. The institute’s courses, events and travel opportunities are designed specifically for people age 50 years plus. This year, OLLI is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

At the open house, people will be able to get complete overviews of courses, meet instructors, register for courses, join OLLI or renew a membership. OLLI and its partners will be hosting informational tables with representatives from OLLI courses. There will also be representatives to provide details about events and travel opportunities.

OLLI continues the new academic year with the theme “Out of Many, One Nebraska.” The theme focuses on providing activities celebrating Nebraska’s 150th birthday of statehood. Here are some examples:

• “Spirit of the North Platte Canteen,” a two-part series, will focus on the U.S. troops’ warm reception in North Platte as they passed through during WWII.
• Learn how Nebraska is managing its surface and groundwater in the four-part course “The Great American Desert is a Water Machine: How Should We Manage It.”
• The “Prairie Schooner,” is a publication of the University of Nebraska Press and home to some of the best fiction, poetry and essays. Learn about the early years of the publication and its national prominence in this two-part series.

There are over 60 courses and events in OLLI’s fall Term 1 which runs from September 5 to October 16. Courses cover a wide-range of topics in literature, politics, theatre, contemporary and historical issues, and science. Two half-day events, “Cutting through the Fog: Mindful Approaches to Improving Memory” and the “2017 OLLI-Winter Lecture Series Symposium: Inequality of Income and Wealth.” Both of these events are open to the public.

The symposium, on Saturday, Oct 21, feature three-nationally-prominent lecturers. The morning lectures will be followed by a panel of local experts discussing inequality at the local level. The fee for the program is $20 and includes lunch.

“Cutting through the Fog: Mindful Approaches to Improving Memory,” will be on Thursday, Nov 3. Learn strategies to help manage the challenges of age-related memory difficulties. The fee is $15 and includes light refreshments.

Travel opportunities include a three-day trip exploring autumn in northeastern Nebraska. Celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with a four-day visit to Branson, Mo. Escape on an 11-day Panama Canal Cruise with stops in the Bahamas, Costa Rica and the Cayman Islands.

For a $75 annual membership fee, members can enjoy all of the courses, events and travel destinations. Members also receive ticket discounts to performances of Abendmusik, Angels Theatre Company, Arts for the Soul, Lincoln Community Playhouse, Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music, Nebraska Chamber Players, TADA Theatre, Johnny Carson School of Theatre & Film productions, Morrill Hall, the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, as well as a new-member discount with Friends of the Ross Theatre and a ten-percent discount on books at the University Bookstore.
