“We feel very honored to be one of the finalists for Best Audiology Clinic in Lincoln,” said Kelly Pritchett, audiology clinic coordinator and associate professor of practice in UNL’s Department of Special Education & Communication Disorders. “There are several offices to choose from in town, and to be in the top three is an amazing recognition for us.”
During the 2016-17 fiscal year, the Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic saw 1,785 patients for hearing and balance services. Those patients ranged in age from two weeks to more than 90 years old.
In addition, the Barkley Clinic houses Nebraska’s three hearing aid banks – HearU Nebraska for children up to age 18, Lions Hearing Aid Bank for individuals ages 19-64, and Sertoma Hearing Aid Bank for individuals age 65 or older. In 2016, nearly 500 hearing aids were dispensed through the three hearing aid banks, providing improved hearing for more than 260 individuals.
The Barkley Clinic is also the hub for HearU International, a humanitarian audiology project started in 2016 by two other professors to provide hearing services for people in Nicaragua. In the first two years of the program’s existence, faculty and students in the Department of Special Education & Communication Disorders have seen approximately 340 patients during three trips to Nicaragua.
