Five faculty and three graduate students from the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders will present posters and seminars as part of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) annual convention Nov. 9-11 in Los Angeles.
Associate professor of practice Kristy Weissling will join colleagues from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and San Jose State University for two seminars about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The first focuses on AAC for individuals with aphasia, while the second is examining protocols for assessing children with autism.
Weissling will also join second-year speech-language pathology master’s student Logan Husa, to present a poster about the Aphasia Community Partners Program at Nebraska. Jessie Kohn, a lecturer in SECD, is the third author on that poster.
Karen Hux, a professor in speech-language pathology will be a presenting author for three poster sessions during the convention. She is also a contributing author to a flash session on the final day. Carly Dinnes, a doctoral student in human sciences, and Morgan Holmen, a second-year speech-language pathology master’s student, are also presenting authors with Hux on one of the posters, titled “A Multicomponent Writing Intervention for a College Student with Mild Brain Injury.”
Cynthia Cress, the Alan T. Seagren Associate Professor of Practice, will also present three posters at ASHA centered on her research with infant communication. Steven Barlow, the Corwin Moore Professor, and Judy Harvey, an assistant professor of practice, are presenting authors on one poster each. Barlow will join individuals from three other universities to present about the effects of Parkinson’s Disease on the perioral muscles. Harvey’s poster examines the use of individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with traumatic brain injury. Barlow is listed as an author on three additional poster presentations as well, all centered around development and communication skills of children born preterm.
