The ABCs of RSVP

Event hosts heavily rely on the number of responses they receive when planning room size, seating charts, catering orders, etc. Generally, you will see two types of response options on event invitations: "RSVP" and "RSVP, regrets only." What do these phrases mean and what should you do?

"RSVP" means you need to respond to the host to either accept or decline the invitation. If you accept the invitation, follow through and attend the event.

"RSVP, regrets only" means you need only to respond if you are unable to attend the event. If you do not respond, it is proper for the host to assume you will be at the event and you should follow through and attend the event.

Also to keep in mind: 1) if the invitation indicates you should RSVP by a certain date, make sure you accept or decline the invitation by that deadline; and 2) if you accept an invitation and find later on that you cannot attend the event contact the event host as soon as possible to decline the invitation.

Please note that RSVPing to events on ROSCOE is a bit unique. When you RSVP to an event in ROSCOE you are indicating that you will be attending the event. There is no way to note in ROSCOE that you are not attending. Thus, when RSVPing to events on ROSCOE only RSVP when you will be attending. If something comes up and you are unable to attend, please cancel your RSVP on the system or contact the Career Services Office.
