New bus routes connecting City and East campuses to Nebraska Innovation Campus will replace UNL's perimeter van service.

The routes were planned in accordance with the move of UNL's Department of Food Science and Technology from East Campus to Nebraska Innovation Campus. StarTran, Lincoln's city-owned bus service, will manage the routes through a five-year, $4.1 million contract with UNL.

"We launch the new routes Aug. 24, which is the first day of the fall semester," said Dan Carpenter, director of parking and transit services.

StarTran has numbered the routes as 22 and 23. Route 22 will connect NIC's Food Innovation Center — the new home to Food Science and Technology — with 14th and Vine streets on City Campus. Route 23 will connect NIC's Innovation Commons building with East Campus.

The new routes will operate during regular StarTran hours, which are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Carpenter said UNL will continue to offer an on-call van service for the entire campus from 6 to 11:30 p.m. weekdays.

Two buses will serve route 22, arriving at each stop approximately every seven minutes. The route 23 bus will arrive at each stop about every 20 minutes.

All UNL students, faculty and staff must have a UNL/StarTran bus pass and an NCard to use the intercampus bus service for free. Without the bus pass and NCard, fares are at regular StarTran prices. Bus passes are free for students, provided through student fees. Faculty and staff can request bus passes at no cost with the purchase of a UNL parking permit or purchase the pass separately through payroll deduction.
