Have you ever explored a pit full of snakes or held giant insects in your hands? Or maybe you're curious about making rain barrels and how to be more eco-friendly. No matter what, "NaturePalooza" has something for everyone.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources will host the free event from 3 to 8 p.m., Sept. 29 at Hardin Hall, located at 33rd and Holdrege streets on UNL's East Campus.
"NaturePalooza and events like it teach us the importance of Nebraska's natural resources in a fun and engaging way," said Lisa Pennisi, associate professor of practice. "It's also a great way to learn science, whether it's about animals, plants or soil. And you can try your hand at new outdoor skills that connect you to nature."
This year, NaturePalooza will feature live shows for the whole family. The String Beans, the friendliest family band in Nebraska, will perform at 6:15 p.m. Representatives from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will deliver a talk at 7 p.m. Then, animals from the Lincoln Children's Zoo will take the stage from 7:15 to 8 p.m.
"Giving children the opportunity to discover nature firsthand is the mission of the Lincoln Children's Zoo," said John Chapo, zoo president and CEO. "We are delighted to collaborate with people and groups who have that same mission. Connecting kids with nature is in the zoo's DNA, and we are very excited to be partnering with NaturePalooza."
In addition to the live shows, the event will feature interactive science exhibits with activities for kids like crawling through a soil tunnel, breaking bones and trivia challenges. Homeowners can learn about bat boxes and rain barrels. Food trucks will also be at the event.
"From singing and dancing with The String Beans to seeing wildlife up-close to learning about one of my favorite critters – bats – to sampling scrumptious food truck fare, NaturePalooza is so much fun," Pennisi said. "Plus, you'll get to learn how you can make your little piece of Nebraska more sustainable."
