Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai died of cancer Sept. 25 in Nairobi, the New York Times reported. Maathai was scheduled to deliver a lecture Sept. 28 at the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues at UNL. That lecture was canceled last week when she became too ill to travel.

A link to a blog post by the Times' Andrew C. Revkin at http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/26/a-passing-wangari-maathai/ chronicles her life and includes a video clip.

"Maathai is best known for creating the Green Belt Movement, which has planted tens of millions of trees around Kenya, but she also personified a positive strain of environmentalism that stands out in a world where “woe is me” messages dominate," Revkin wrote. A link to her obituary is also included on the blog.
