Amish Quilts, Amish Culture Subject of April 16 Olson Seminar
WHEN: Wednesday, April 16, 3:30-5 p.m.
WHERE: Great Plains Art Collection in the Christlieb Gallery, 1155 Q St., Hewit Place
The quilts and the culture of the Amish will be the subject of this spring's final Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies at UNL. Ricky Clark, affiliate Scholar at Ohio's Oberlin College and an associate fellow of the International Quilt Study Center at UNL, will present Amish Quilts and Amish Culture from 3:30 to 5pm today in the Christlieb Gallery, 1155 Q St.
A quilt historian, Clark is particularly interested in Amish quilts, for her home state of Ohio has the largest Amish population in the world. She is author of Quilts in Community: Ohio's Tradition, which devotes a chapter to Germanic sectarian aesthetics and quiltmaking traditions in the state.
Her presentation will include a historical overview of the Amish people and their quilts from their beginnings in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century to the current styles crafted throughout the Midwest. She will differentiate between religious and ethnic influences within Amish culture and discuss how the convergence of the influences resulted in the distinctive Amish quiltmaking tradition.
Clark's presentation is co-sponsored by the International Quilt Study Center with support from the Nebraska Humanities Council.
The lecture and a 3pm reception in the gallery are free and open to the public.
