Loans to Fuel Entrepreneurship

UNL and Wells Fargo have teamed up to start a first-of-its-kind in the nation program to support new businesses created by business students. Through its Community Development Corp. to assist new business development, Wells Fargo has provided $50,000 in low-interest funds that UNL students will be able to borrow at interest rates typically available only to people with solid credit histories.

According to Terry Sebora, director of UNL's Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship, "This is about growing the economy and creating new jobs." Sebora's course in entrepreneurship was recently singled out as the most entrepreneurial course for undergraduates in the nation by the U.S. Association of Small Business Entrepreneurs.

The Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship will organize a loan review committee to review applications and set interest rates. The committee includes Sebora, a Wells Fargo loan officer, students from the College of Business Administration banking class, under guidance of their professor; and a representative of the loan administrator, Community Development Resources, a Lincoln-based nonprofit that will provide loan maintenance services and ongoing technical assistance to the borrowers after they graduate from UNL. more...

ASSUMES POST AUG 15
Couture Named UNL Senior Vice Chancellor

Barbara Couture, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Washington State University in Pullman, has been named senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNL, Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced.

"Dr. Couture is a good fit for this university. She brings the credentials, talent and leadership that will keep the university moving forward in its academic evolution to best serve its students and the state," Perlman said.

Couture will begin Aug. 15 as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs -- UNL's chief academic officer and second to the chancellor in the university's organizational chart. The office provides leadership and support for academic programs and serves as chief advocate for faculty and students.

"I am delighted with this opportunity to work with the outstanding faculty and staff at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln," Couture said. "The quality of UNL's academic programs, recognized nationally and internationally for their excellence, drew me to this position. The strong support of the state of Nebraska for this premier university is evident everywhere. I look forward to working together with faculty, staff and students to increase UNL's service to the state and expand its reach nationwide."

"Particularly attractive to me is the strong and effective leadership of Chancellor Perlman and UNL's team of vice chancellors and deans. This is a university that is structured for success. I hope to work with these fine leaders and UNL's faculty and staff to help them meet their highest aspirations," she said.

Couture has been dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Washington State University since 1998, managing 18 academic departments and programs. She earned a bachelor's degree with high distinction from the University of Michigan (1970) and earned master and doctor of arts degrees in English language and literature (1973, 1980). She began her academic career as an assistant professor of English at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1980, was promoted to associate professor, achieved tenure in 1986 and achieved the rank of professor in 1994. At Wayne State, she also served as an associate dean for curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts (1990-91) and associate dean for metropolitan programs and summer sessions in the College of Lifelong Learning (1993-97). An award-winning writer, Couture received the Outstanding Book Award at the 2000 Conference on College Composition and Communication for Toward a Phenomenological Rhetoric: Writing, Profession and Altruism.

Couture will succeed Richard Edwards, who served from April 1997 until the end of 2003, when he resigned to return to the teaching and research faculty. David Brinkerhoff is interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.
