Voting on Fourth Round of Real Nebraska
Videos Continues
Voting on the fourth round of the Fall
2004 Real Nebraska video contest continues today on the Real Nebraska
website. Using the theme "There is No Place Like Nebraska," entries
were taken from full time UNL students and/or teams of full time
UNL students.
In addition to three monetary prizes, winners of the contest will
be screened at a film festival that will take place in March at the
Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. All entries will be shown and
the "Viewer's Choice" winners, as well as the Grand Prize winner,
will be announced at this event. The festival will be open to the
public and the campus.

UNL Senior Pluhowsky Captures 2004
AMF Bowling World Cup
Shannon Pluhowsky, a 22-year-old
senior at the University of Nebraska, reclaimed her bowling world-title
at the recent 2004 AMF Bowling World Cup held in Singapore. Winner
of the same title in 2002, she was defeated in the 2003 World Cup
by Kerrie Ryan-Ciach of Canada, whom she then defeated in this years
finals to capture the title again.
On her road to the finals, Pluhowsky
swept through her quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches
at SuperBowl SAFRA Mount Faber with a 242.0 average, defeating each
of her opponents 2 games to 0 in the best-of-three-games knockout
format.
She defeated Scotland's Laura Rhoney in the quarters, 223-204 and
231-163, then dropped Liza Del Rosario of the Philippines, 259-226
and 269-169. Ryan-Ciach, who advanced with a 2-0 win over qualifying
leader Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia (201-197, 235-225) and a 2-1 victory
over Yoselin Leon of Puerto Rico (279-190, 193-257, 208-193), never
mounted much of an offense in the title match. Pluhowsky easily dispatched
the defending champion 236-200 and 234-185 to become only the third
woman in history to win the World Cup twice.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Week to Open with Keynote Address from Student
The first student to give the keynote
address in the UNL celebration's eight-year history, Collin Sullivan
will speak as part of a program beginning at 2 pm in the Mary Riepma
Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N. 13th St. The program, which will kick
off a weeklong series of activities at UNL, will also include musical
performances by Ellie Kirke and the River City Mixed Chorus, and
the presentation of the "Fulfilling the Dream" Awards by Chancellor
Harvey Perlman. The program will be followed by a 3 pm reception
in the great hall of the adjacent Van Brunt Visitors Center.
Sullivan, a junior from Pawtucket, R.I., is co-president of Amnesty International-UNL and writes weekly opinion columns for the Daily Nebraskan student newspaper. He is a first-year participant in the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences program, studying human rights in comparative foreign policy, and is a community assistant in the Cornhusker Courtyards residence hall. He has majors in political science, international studies and Spanish.
The Jan. 17 program and reception and all MLK Week activities are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted, and are presented under the theme "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On . . . Not at Day Off."
