$1000 Real Nebraska Movie Winner Announced

The Real Nebraska Movie Contest announced Michael Sukraw as the winner of the $1,000 Grand prize at an awards show event Thursday, March 3. In addition to the top prize, three $250 runner-up prizes were also handed out at the event. Those winners are Cinema 16, Bright Eye Productions and Juanita Page. The winners were determined by online votes and a panel of judges. The judges include Alan Cerveny, Dean of Admissions; Danny Lee Ladely, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center Director; Trina Creighton, UNL broadcasting instructor; Katie Weichman, ASUN president; and Melissa Lee, Editor of the Daily Nebraskan. The Real Nebraska Movie Awards were held at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center on University of Nebraska-Lincoln's city campus.

The contest is a variation of the popular "Real Nebraska" project developed in fall 2003 featuring UNL students on an interactive website. Cerveny said the contest was a way to keep the program fresh and exciting. "We have extremely creative students at UNL," Cerveny said. "We wanted to tap into that creative energy and provide our students with an opportunity to share their unique perspectives on UNL in interesting and entertaining ways."

NEBRASKA UNION AUDITORIUM, 11:30AM
Youth Violence, Aggression is Topic of UNL Lecture Series

William Pollack

  William Pollack

Four internationally known researchers and authors will be featured in a lecture series on youth violence and aggression at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The first of this series is entitled "Youth Violence and Aggression in Families, Schools and Communities: Research and Policy Implications," and will be headlined by international expert and best-selling author of "Real Boys," William Pollack on March 7. The lecture will be held from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St and is free and open to the public.

Pollack is the best-selling author of "Real Boys," "Real Boys' Voices" and "Real Boys Workbook," on "Real Boys and Young Men: Hearing their Voices, Understanding Their Pain, Healing their Disconnection;" He has appeared as an expert and author on boys on many national news programs. He is on staff at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, and serves as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Secret Service. Pollack's research focuses on how boys and adolescent males are failing in our society and how society is failing them. Whether it is on the school academic ladder, the educational social system or the massive disconnect of young males from nurturing and mentoring adults, boys are in crisis, according to Pollack. This crisis, however, is beginning to turn the corner toward opportunities for intervention and change. Pollack will talk about the Listening to Boys Voices Research Study conducted by Harvard affiliated scholars, his foray into the popular media and the federally supported Safe School Initiative and new pilot study of Bystander Behavior as central to changing school climates.

The presentations are of interest to elementary, middle- and high-school teachers, youth volunteers and advocates, social service workers, mental health professionals and counselors, as well as parents, grandparents or anyone interested in the topic, said Susan Sheridan, Willa Cather professor of educational psychology at UNL and director of the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools.

"We are extremely fortunate to host such a world-class group of researchers on the critical topic of youth violence and aggression," Sheridan said. "This issue is of extreme importance in our own community. When children engage in or are victims of violence and aggression, we all suffer, not only the children themselves, but schools, families and communities as well. The information shared by these international researchers will help us better understand and address youth violence in our schools, families and neighborhoods."

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
Continuing this week at the Ross: The Merchant Of Venice, King Of The Corner

now showing at the ross

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents director Michael Radford's The Merchant Of Venice, which he adapted and scripted from William Shakespeare's classic play and Peter Riegert's directorial debut feature The King Of The Corner, a film based on UNL Professor Gerald Shapiro's award-winning volume of short stories, "Bad Jews and Other Stories."

Set in 16th century Venice, Shakespeare's timeless comedy/drama follows the fates and fortunes of a group of Christian noblemen and their interactions with the Jewish moneylender Shylock. Antonio (Jeremy Irons) borrows money from Shylock (Al Pacino) to help his young penniless friend Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) in his quest to win the hand of the fair Portia (Lynn Collins). Bitter at Antonio's insults, Shylock stipulates very specific terms if he defaults on the loan. As Antonio's shipping business is devastated by storms, Shylock is further angered by his daughter's elopement with the nobleman Lorenzo (Charlie Cox). The loan falls due and Shylock claims his forfeit in the form of a pound of Antonio's flesh. As Bassanio desperately tries to save Antonio from this fate, miraculous help comes from an unexpected quarter.

Actor Peter Riegert's directorial debut feature The King Of The Corner is a sly, deadpan social comedy about the dangers of navigating life without a compass. Facing a midlife crisis, Leo finds himself at a crossroads of Isaac Bashevis Singer and The Godfather. Based on Gerald Shapiro's award-winning volume of short stories, "Bad Jews and Other Stories," this tale starts to spin out of control as this harried man can't handle the pressures of his life: His father is dying, his daughter is growing up, his protégé is after his job, his wife is running out of patience, and his judgment is becoming blurred. Leo has met the enemy and it is he, but through a twist of fate and the wisdom of his rabbi, he redeems himself and gets a second chance. But at what cost?
