Point Of No Return
MUELLER PLANETARIUM, SAT, SUN 2PM, 3PM
Mueller Planetarium Hosts "Point Of No Return"

Journey with Mueller Planetarium into a universe of bizarre monsters as the planetarium explores quasars and supermassive black holes in a new show: "Point of No Return." The feature delves into the story of quasars, the most powerful steady sources of energy in the universe. Quasars are powered by supermassive black holes with masses millions to billions of times the mass of our sun. It is only within the last few years that astronomers have been acquiring a more complete picture of quasars. "Point of No Return" uses powerful graphics to represent some of the newest discoveries.

The new show, which will be in shown in planetariums around the country, was created by Mueller Planetarium and produced with financial support from the Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute. It is a collaborative effort between members of the Mueller Planetarium staff, and UNL quasar research group members Martin Gaskell, Mary Hiller, and Elizabeth Klimek. The late Thomas Gehringer, director of the Burke High School planetarium in Omaha, served as the educational consultant to the show. The show is dedicated to his memory. The music is by award-winning composer Mark Petersen. The new program is the first produced entirely digitally by Mueller Planetarium. The Mueller Planetarium showings of "Point of No Return" are preceded by an introduction to the current night sky's constellations and planets. The entire presentation lasts approximately 35 minutes.

Admission to Planetarium Astronomy Shows is $6 for Adults and $4 for all Children and UNL students. This price includes museum admission. All tickets are sold at the front desk of the Museum once the Museum opens for the day. Mueller Planetarium is located in the University of Nebraska State Museum (Morrill Hall) at 14th and U. Streets on the UNL City Campus.

NEBRASKA UNION, MON 8:30-10:30AM
Silicon Valley CEO to Speak As Part Of EIT Conference

Brian Halla

Brian Halla

What do cool new consumer products and the emergence of China have in common? Both are having an indelible impact on the technology industry and the U.S. economy. Braced for the next boom, semiconductor companies are ushering in a new era for the electronics industry, enhancing experiences for consumers and creating new jobs.

Brian Halla, chairman, president and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp. and a University of Nebraska-Lincoln alumnus, will address those issues in a talk May 23 at UNL titled "On the Verge of a Boom." Halla will speak from 8:30 to 10:30 am at the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. His talk is free and open to the public and is the keynote address of the IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology, hosted by the UNL College of Engineering & Technology May 22-25.

Halla joined National, which is headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., in May 1996. Previously he served as executive vice president of the Product Group at LSI Logic Corp., where he was a key factor in the company's development of its CoreWare design program. Capitalizing on National's strength in analog technology, leading-edge process technologies and world class manufacturing capabilities, Halla has sharpened the company's strategic focus to serve four major growth market segments: wireless, displays, PCs/servers and networking.

Halla serves on the boards of the Semiconductor Industry Association, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, the Technology Network (Tech Net) and Foveon Inc. as well as the Berkeley Engineering and University of Nebraska Engineering College Advisory boards. He is also a member of the New York Stock Exchange Advisory Committee.

IEEE is a nonprofit, technical professional association of more than 360,000 individual members in approximately 175 countries. Its full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
Continuing This Week at the Ross: Gunner Palace, Travellers & Magicians

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Gunner Palace, a unique documentary about the Iraq war from director Michael Tucker and Travellers & Magicians, the first feature-length film to be made completely within the Kingdom of Bhutan.

now showing at the ross

Gunner Palace is a unique portrait of the fragmented, chaotic and stress-filled existence of American soldiers at war in Iraq. Filmmaker Michael Tucker captured the lives of the members of the 2/3 Field Artillery AKA the "Gunners," whose living headquarters are housed in Uday Hussein's Azimiya Palace, situated in the middle of Adhamiya, the most volatile area in Baghdad. It is not the violence of war that defines this thought-provoking documentary feature, but rather the soldiers' individual and personal responses to war: Sgt. Nick Moncrief, a young squad leader with two kids and a wife, breaks into a freestyle rap in front of the palace after an attack; SPC Stuart Wilf, who joined the army at 17, spends his nights with his guitar by the palace gate; their commander, LTC Bill Rabena, thinks the palace is an "adult's paradise;" and one of the only female soldiers, SPC Billie Grimes, calmly tells of her experience as a combat medic. With total access to all unit operations and activities, captured in his own distinct verite style, filmmaker Tucker provides a rare series of intimate "snapshots" that reveal the complex realities of a war that has to be seen to be understood.

Writer-director Khyentse Norbu, who scored an international hit with the 1999 drama The Cup (Phorpa), about Tibetan refugees obsessed with watching the World Cup soccer finals, returns to his homeland to make the remarkably charming and engaging Travellers & Magicians, the first feature-length film to be made completely within the Kingdom of Bhutan. Norbu, who worked with Bernardo Bertolucci on 1997's Little Buddha, is believed to be His Eminence Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, an incarnate lama, and he infuses Travellers & Magicians with a thoughtful and contemplative Buddhist mind-set. In the film, Norbu magnificently intertwines the tales of various travellers, creating an enchanting, unforgettable film that is filled with heart, hope, and humor.
