Engineering Hosts Panel to Discuss What the Public Should Know About Bridges
In light of the Aug. 1 collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Civil Engineering will host a seminar on bridge engineering Aug. 8.
"The Layperson's Guide to Bridge Engineering" will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. The event is free and open to the public. more...

Movies On The Green Features Our Town
The stars will shine again on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus when the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and University Program Council unspool the annual Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection Movies on the Green series. The series continues this Thursday evening with the filmed version of Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Our Town," directed by Sam Wood.
Screenings are free and open to the public and begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.). Popcorn and soda are sold at the screenings. Film commentary written by Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection donor Jerry Jensen will be distributed free of charge. more...

Introducing The Dwights, Summercamp! Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Introducing The Dwights and Summercamp! Summercamp! will show through August 9, while Introducing The Dwights plays through August 16.
Introducing The Dwights is a heartfelt comedy about a mother who tries to come between her son and his coming of age. Tim's mom, Jean, is a bawdy and risque comedienne still hoping to make it big. His brother Mark helps their mother rehearse for shows. Together, they inhabit a non-traditional household where chaos is the norm, the music is always on, and Jean's larger-than-life personality takes center stage. When Tim meets and falls for Jill, his home becomes a combat zone as his mother fears this new girl, whose name she refuses to remember, will "break up" the unique family unit she's tried so hard to keep together. In this quirky and oftentimes touching tale, Tim must learn to manage the emotions of the women of his life without losing himself in the process.
Featuring original music from The Flaming Lips and Noisola, Summercamp! Is a hilarious and heartfelt film that follows the day-to-day drama of 90 kids let loose in the woods at Swift Nature Camp in northern Wisconsin. Camp is a place where kids can be kids, where their home and school lives momentarily fade into the background as they go through the highs and lows of adolescent rituals: sing-alongs, talent shows, homesickness, counselor mutiny--and first love. Amidst group activities, showy arguments, and secret conversations, filmmakers Bradley Beesley and Sarah Price submerge themselves into this curious camp subculture, capturing a diverse array of adolescents from all economic and social backgrounds. Through the non-calloused eyes of kids, Summercamp! captures the raw emotional experiences that will endure with them for the rest of their lives.
