Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles
ROBERT HILLESTAD TEXTILES GALLERY
Globalization and Labor in Textiles' at Hillestad Gallery

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host "Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles," an exhibition through Jan. 11 that features new works by eight contemporary artist/designers. A public reception with the artists providing brief remarks about the work will be held today from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

While many of the Hillestad Textiles Gallery exhibitions address the fine art of apparel and design, this is the first of its kind to critically address the industry at large or "the making." The resulting works range from group installations with a participatory element to very personal interpretations. Collectively, they address the origin and nature of the controversial issue. more...

In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, is a suspenseful thriller directed by master filmmaker Sidney Lumet about a family facing the worst enemy of all - itself. Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Andy, an overextended broker who lures his younger brother, Hank (Ethan Hawke) into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target. The problem is, the store owners are Andy and Hank's actual mom and pop and, when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry, the damage lands right at their doorstep.
