Winter Wonderland
THROUGH MARCH 23
'Winter Wonderland' Prints From Zlotsky Collection Open at Sheldon

Opening Dec. 21, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present an exhibition of 30 prints, dating from 1860 to 1960, that documents the evolution of the printmaking craft in American art. "Winter Wonderland: Prints from the Collection of Norman and Judy Zlotsky" includes paintings, engravings, woodcuts and lithographs, and will be on view through March 23.

"Winter Wonderland" shows how printmakers have responded to the subject of winter. Early works on view include wood engravings by Winslow Homer, who was an illustrator prior to his success as a painter. "The Old Farm House," an 1872 Currier and Ives color lithograph, was also printed in a large edition for mass audiences. more...

Nebraska Innovation Park
UNL Proposes Concept Plan for Nebraska Innovation Campus

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln released concept plans for use of State Fair Park as a model research park called Nebraska Innovation Park. The Nebraska Innovation Park conceptual plan is modeled on successful existing national research university public-private partnerships. One such example is Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University, where more than 70 businesses now operate, providing new jobs and revenue for the state and its citizens.

"Now that we have seen the consultant's report, as part of the ongoing conversation, we want the public to see what might be possible should the university be able to use the land at State Fair Park," UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman said in releasing the concept plan. more...

Historic Newspapers
100,000 PAGES FROM 3 DECADES
Historic Newspapers Go Digital With Grant

Nebraska newspaper coverage of historical events and everyday life from 1880 through 1910 is going digital -- part of a free national online database -- thanks to a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Through the Nebraska Digital Newspapers Project, about 100,000 pages of Nebraska newspapers from the period will be digitized for inclusion in the Library of Congress' national Chronicling America Web site. UNL's University Libraries is partnering with the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Nebraska State Historical Society on the two-year, $271,000 "We the People" grant. Nebraska is one of nine states selected in the early phases of this project, which eventually will include all 50 states. "We the People" grants recognize model projects that advance the study, teaching and understanding of American history and culture. more...

Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles
ROBERT HILLESTAD TEXTILES GALLERY
Globalization and Labor in Textiles' at Hillestad Gallery

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host "Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles," an exhibition through Jan. 11 that features new works by eight contemporary artist/designers. A public reception with the artists providing brief remarks about the work will be held today from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

While many of the Hillestad Textiles Gallery exhibitions address the fine art of apparel and design, this is the first of its kind to critically address the industry at large or "the making." The resulting works range from group installations with a participatory element to very personal interpretations. Collectively, they address the origin and nature of the controversial issue. more...
