'Last Year on the Farm' Opens at Great Plains Art Museum

Texas artist V.... Vaughan's daily plein air paintings documenting the last days on her family's multi-generational farm will be presented in "Last Year on the Farm," an exhibit at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Great Plains Art Museum Jan. 2 through March 14.

Vaughan has lived and painted on her farm northeast of Austin, Texas, for 30 years, but the land is now in the hands of suburban developers. Three-hundred sixty-five paintings reveal the seasons of change in her last year on these 200 acres of farmland. The series includes Vaughan's "24-in-24" challenges representing one of the four seasons. more...

Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles
ROBERT HILLESTAD TEXTILES GALLERY
Globalization and Labor in Textiles' at Hillestad Gallery

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host "Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles," an exhibition through Jan. 11 that features new works by eight contemporary artist/designers. A public reception with the artists providing brief remarks about the work will be held today from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

While many of the Hillestad Textiles Gallery exhibitions address the fine art of apparel and design, this is the first of its kind to critically address the industry at large or "the making." The resulting works range from group installations with a participatory element to very personal interpretations. Collectively, they address the origin and nature of the controversial issue. more...
