SHELDON MEMORIAL ART GALLERY, THROUGH APR. 27
Art Farm Continues at Sheldon
Opening Friday, Jan. 4 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, "Art Farm @ Sheldon" is a collaborative project with Jeff Day, an associate professor of architecture at UNL, and UNL architecture students. On view through April 27, the exhibition concerns the complex interrelationship of art, landscape and architecture in a rural context. It focuses on design proposals for the development of Art Farm, a nonprofit art residency program situated on a 40-acre working farm near Marquette.
Work in the exhibition includes architectural models, renderings, diagrams and drawings as well as works created by artists associated with Art Farm, including Janet Williams, Amanda Thatch, Sibylle Muff, Ayako Aramaki and others. In addition, in Sheldon's Great Hall the exhibition features installation of an old farm building from Art Farm that has been repurposed as a video lounge with a modern interior. more...

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
Darfur Now and Romance & Cigarettes Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Darfur Now and Romance & Cigarettes. Both films will show through January 17.

Darfur Now is a story of hope in the midst of one of humanity's darkest hours - a call to action for people everywhere to end the catastrophe unfolding in Darfur, Sudan. In this documentary, the struggles and achievements of six different individuals from inside Darfur and around the world bring to light the tragedy in Sudan and show how the actions of one person can make a difference to millions. Written and directed by Ted Braun, the film explores the Darfur conflict through the first-hand experiences of Don Cheadle, Hejewa Adam, Pablo Recalde, Ahmed Mohammed Abakar, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, and Adam Sterling.
Part comedy, part romance, part drama, part musical, John Turturro's Romance & Cigarettes teeters on the brink of collapse at every single moment, just like the fragile characters that inhibit the film's frantic, manic world. The result is an unsettling, exhilarating, and thrillingly alive spectacle of a motion picture. To make matters more bizarre, characters break out into song-and-dance routines whenever the fancy strikes them. While Turturro's film is certainly an acquired taste, it is nonetheless one of the more distinct works of the decade. He creates a world that is fraying at the edges, with characters who are clearly desperate to retain a connection to someone or something in our harsh modern world.
