UNL Announces New Energy Sciences Minor
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has created a new interdisciplinary minor in energy sciences, beginning in fall 2008. The minor can be declared by students in any undergraduate major, and will provide an opportunity for students to learn about the capture, production, storage and utilization of energy, and the associated energy choices societies must make related to economics and the environment.
"We want students to obtain an understanding of energy, what it has meant to societies historically, and how important energy is to our lives," said Ron Yoder, head of UNL's Department of Biological Systems Engineering and leader of the steering committee that developed the minor. more...

Sixth Annual Research Fair Continues
The sixth annual UNL Research Fair continues today in the Nebraska Union. This three-day celebration of research collaboration, creativity and innovation features speakers from major funding agencies, educational workshops and recognition of faculty success.
The Office of Research hosts the fair. It offers opportunities for faculty, staff and students to interact with representatives from federal agencies, visit with colleagues and explore ideas for future research and collaboration. Graduate and undergraduate students will showcase their research and creative activities at poster sessions. The fair is free and open to the public but registration is required for some events. Check out the full events schedule at the UNL Research Fair web site, where you can register for events that require it.

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
The Band's Visit and City of Men Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Band's Visit and City Of Men. Both films will show through April 10.
Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin's debut feature, The Band's Visit, is a subtle, heartfelt, and humane work that goes a long way toward dissolving the incredibly complex cultural divide that continues to plague the Middle East. Kolirin perfectly navigates his film's slice-of-life tone, blending comedy and drama and poignancy without ever succumbing to one completely. In the wrong hands, this material could turn into a quirk-fest that parodies everyday life. Yet under Kolirin's assured command, it becomes something that feels like life itself. The Band's Visit is funny, lonely, inspiring, sad, and beautiful all at once.
In City Of Men, producer Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardner) returns to the Brazilian favelas of his Academy Award-nominated film, City of God. Growing up in a culture dictated by violence and run by street gangs, teenagers Acerola (Douglas Silva) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) have become close as brothers. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.
