GREAT PLAINS ART MUSEUM, 3PM
Causes of Great Plains Droughts Discussed at Olson Seminar
Drought is a ubiquitous feature of the Great Plains. In human history, it has been as short as a few weeks or months or prolonged over several years. The prehistoric record indicates something quite different, however -- so-called "megadroughts" that persisted for decades or longer.
That history will be the subject of the next Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. UNL geoscientist Robert Oglesby will present "Causes of Drought in the Great Plains" 3:30 to 5 p.m. April 9 at the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St. The seminar and a 3 p.m. reception in the museum are free and open to the public. more...

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
The Band's Visit and City of Men Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Band's Visit and City Of Men. Both films will show through April 10.
Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin's debut feature, The Band's Visit, is a subtle, heartfelt, and humane work that goes a long way toward dissolving the incredibly complex cultural divide that continues to plague the Middle East. Kolirin perfectly navigates his film's slice-of-life tone, blending comedy and drama and poignancy without ever succumbing to one completely. In the wrong hands, this material could turn into a quirk-fest that parodies everyday life. Yet under Kolirin's assured command, it becomes something that feels like life itself. The Band's Visit is funny, lonely, inspiring, sad, and beautiful all at once.
In City Of Men, producer Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardner) returns to the Brazilian favelas of his Academy Award-nominated film, City of God. Growing up in a culture dictated by violence and run by street gangs, teenagers Acerola (Douglas Silva) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) have become close as brothers. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.
