UNL research funding climbs to nearly $106 million in 2007-08
External funding for research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln set a record again this year of nearly $106 million, according to the UNL Office of Research.
Research funding, which totaled $105.7 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, includes all external funds awarded for university research projects. Funding increased 3.2 percent from $102.4 million a year earlier. Of this year's total, $72 million came from federal sources, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, Department of Education and other agencies. Belashchenko Honored for Magnet Study
Kirill Belashchenko sees more to magnets and spin than just MP3s and iPods. His work on a new theory may lead to spin-based devices that will be faster than ever at reading and analyzing data. The assistant professor of physics at UNL has received a $100,000 Cottrell Award from the Research Corporation, which will support his research on magnetic materials.
As a researcher in the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience, Belashchenko focuses on the theory for computers that use spintronics, which is based on quantum spin of electrons rather than charge. more...

Mongol and Jellyfish Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Mongol and Jellyfish. Jellyfish will show through July 24, while Mongol will screen through July 31
Filmed in the very lands that gave birth to Genghis Khan, Mongol transports us back to a distant and exotic period in world history; to a nomad's landscape of endless space, climatic extremes and ever-present danger. In a performance of powerful stillness and subtlety, celebrated young Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu (Zatoichi, Last Life in the Universe) captures the inner fire that enabled a hunted boy to become a legendary conqueror. Asano's achievement is matched by those of his co-stars, including the radiant newcomer Khulan Chuluun as Khan's courageous, spirited wife Borte, and the Chinese actor Honglei Sun (The Road Home) as the Mongol chieftain Jamukha, Khan's dearest friend and deadliest enemy. Masterfully blending action and emotion against some of the most arresting terrain on earth, Bodrov delivers an exciting and awe-inspiring tale of survival and triumph, and a love story for the ages.
Jellyfish (Meduzot) is a magical film that surprises and unsettles in the most delicate of ways. Connections and relationships come into focus against a backdrop of memory and, perhaps, imagination. Poignant, often witty and exceedingly cinematic, the movie tells the story of three very different Tel Aviv women whose intersecting stories weave an unlikely portrait of modern Israeli life. Batya, a catering waitress, takes in a child apparently abandoned at a local beach. Batya is one of the servers at the wedding reception of Keren, a bride whose wedding party accident ruins her chance at a dream Caribbean honeymoon. Attending the event with an employer is Joy, a non Hebrew-speaking domestic worker who has guiltily left her son behind in her native Philippines. As this distaff trio separately wends their way through Israel’s most cosmopolitan city, they struggle with issues of communication, affection and destiny—but at times find uneasy refuge in its tranquil seas.
