UNL Joins Carnegie-Knight Initiative on Transforming Journalism Education
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications will receive a $250,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to launch a series of new courses.
UNL was invited in 2007 to join a consortium of the country's top journalism schools in a national initiative to redefine journalism education and train a new generation of journalists capable of reshaping the news industry. more...

International Affairs Hosts Fulbright Program
International Affairs hosts a Fulbright Gateway Orientation Program for 58 and 65 international Fulbright scholars during two sessions Aug. 3-8 and Aug. 10-14.
The scholars will hear about the goals and traditions of Fulbright Program and the Institute for International Education, be initiated to education in the U.S. and academic life, including libraries and resources for electronic research. The will have sessions on cultural awareness and on policy-making in the United States and sessions on leadership.The Aug. 3-8 program includes home stays in a rural community with a focus on the role of volunteer associations in the United States; the second program includes a field trip to the Durham Western Museum and Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. A banquet to include university officials, the Secretary of the State of Nebraska and other local officials concludes each program.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer and Roman De Gare. Both films will show for only one week only through August 7.
In her tenderly comic, richly textured feature debut How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer, Georgina Garcia Riedel lovingly explores the terrain of longing, loneliness, and self-realization among three generations of single women in a Mexican American family as they grapple with romantic drought. Like the folks in the story, Riedel's camera never hurries, savoring the poetic vistas and lazy rhythms of the rural Southwest without resorting to sentimentality. Her three heroines are utterly human--full of idiosyncrasies and unexpected charms. In each of them is a distinctive, newly discovered sensuality, an engine that drives them forward, kicking up dust as they go.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas, Blindsight follows the gripping adventure of six Tibetan teenagers who set out to climb the 23,000 foot Lhakpa Ri on the north side of Mount Everest. A dangerous journey soon becomes a seemingly impossible challenge made all the more remarkable by the fact that the teenagers are blind. Believed by many Tibetans to be possessed by demons, the children are shunned by their parents, scorned by their villages and rejected by society. Rescued by Sabriye Tenberken -- a blind educator and adventurer who established the first school for the blind in Lhasa, the students invite the famous blind mountain climber Erik Weihenmayer to visit their school after learning about his conquest of Everest. Erik arrives in Lhasa and inspires Sabriye and her students Kyila, Sonam Bhumtso, Tashi, Gyenshen, Dachung and Tenzin to let him lead them higher than they have ever been before.
