UNL research funding climbs to nearly $106 million in 2007-08
External funding for research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln set a record again this year of nearly $106 million, according to the UNL Office of Research.
Research funding, which totaled $105.7 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, includes all external funds awarded for university research projects. Funding increased 3.2 percent from $102.4 million a year earlier. Of this year's total, $72 million came from federal sources, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, Department of Education and other agencies. King Exhibit Continues at Sheldon Museum of Art
A mid-career survey, "The Sizes of Things in the Mind's Eye," continuing at the Sheldon Museum of Art on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, presents approximately 65 sculptures, film animations, installations, drawings and photographs by artist Elizabeth King.
King combines her meticulously wrought figurative sculptures with stop-frame film animation in installations that blur the boundary between actual and virtual space. Intimate in scale and distinguished by a level of craft that solicits close viewing, this work reflects her interests in early clockwork automata, the history of the mannequin and the puppet, and literature's host of legends in which the inanimate or artificial figure comes to life. more...

Up The Yangtze and Savage Grace Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Up The Yangtze and Savage Grace. Both films will show for only one week only through August 14.
In China, it is simply known as "The River." But the Yangtze—and all of the life that surrounds it—is undergoing a truly astonishing transformation wrought by the largest hydroelectric project in history, the Three Gorges Dam. Canadian documentary filmmaker Yung Chang returns to the gorgeous, now-disappearing landscape of his grandfather's youth to trace the surreal life of a "farewell cruise" that traverses the gargantuan waterway. Singularly moving and cinematically breathtaking, Up The Yangtze gives a human dimension to the wrenching changes facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large.
Savage Grace, based on the award winning book, tells the incredible true story of Barbara Daly, who married above her class to Brooks Baekeland, the dashing heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Beautiful, red-headed and charismatic, Barbara is still no match for her well-bred husband. The birth of the couple's only child, Tony, rocks the uneasy balance in this marriage of extremes. Tony is a failure in his father's eyes. As he matures and becomes increasingly close to his lonely mother, the seeds for a tragedy of spectacular decadence are sown. Spanning 1946 to 1972, the film unfolds in six acts. The Baekelands' pursuit of social distinction and the glittering 'good life' propels them across the globe. We follow their heady rise and tragic fall against the backdrop of New York, Paris, Cadaques, Mallorca and London.
