UNL Wins Major Grant to Recruit, Retain Women in Science, Engineering
A $3.8 million National Science Foundation grant will help the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recruit, promote and retain female faculty in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
At UNL, women comprise less than 20 percent of faculty in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Nationally, NSF reports that women comprise 29 percent of science and engineering faculty at four-year colleges and universities. The five-year grant will enable UNL to create new programs to recruit and support women faculty through each stage of their career. The grant is from NSF's ADVANCE program, which aims to increase participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers. more...
King Exhibit Continues at Sheldon Museum of Art
A mid-career survey, "The Sizes of Things in the Mind's Eye," continues at the Sheldon Museum of Art on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, presents approximately 65 sculptures, film animations, installations, drawings and photographs by artist Elizabeth King.
King combines her meticulously wrought figurative sculptures with stop-frame film animation in installations that blur the boundary between actual and virtual space. Intimate in scale and distinguished by a level of craft that solicits close viewing, this work reflects her interests in early clockwork automata, the history of the mannequin and the puppet, and literature's host of legends in which the inanimate or artificial figure comes to life. more...

Encounters At The End Of The World and The Animation Show Year Four Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Encounters At The End Of The World and The Animation Show Year Four. Both films will show through September 11.
Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) confirms his standing as poet laureate of men in extreme situations with Encounters At The End Of The World. In this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer (Oct-Feb). Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from society as one can get.
"The Animation Show," which has put together three previous feature-length collections, started in 2003 with Mike Judge of "Beavis and Butt-head" fame and Oscar-nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt curating, but this year finds Judge solely in control. After last year's somber program, or, as May called it, "a dozen shorts on death," Judge and the producers wanted the show to play lighter and faster. "This year we tried to focus more on comedy," Judge said. "This tour is like the midnight shows I loved to watch [at the International Tourneés of Animation] with a good mix of comedy and shorts that are visually amazing to look at on the big screen."
