College Of Architecture Opens Hyde Lecture Series
The UNL College of Architecture opens their annual Hyde Lecture series with Chris Abel (the current visiting Hyde Chair of Excellence) delivering the talk, "Foster and Gehry: One Technology; Two Cultures." Abel is an accomplished architectural author, scholar, and critic based in Sydney Australia. His lecture is free, open to the public.

Lentz Center Opens The Daily Arts of Bhutan
The Lentz Center for Asian Culture opens its fall exhibition, "The Daily Arts of Bhutan," on Friday, September 5 from 5-7 p.m. The show is a celebration of a gift of 50 items and 67 books to the Lentz Center by UNL alumna Kay Kirby Dorji. Dorji will speak at about 6 p.m. today during the opening.
Dorji makes her home in Bhutan when she is not on assignment. This exhibition is dedicated to her late husband and her parents. The gift to the center includes textiles, jewelry, ritual items and some everyday items. Textiles are the most important art form in Bhutan and are only produced by women. They are used as trade items and international gifts as well as local uses. The exhibition continues through Dec. 14.

Green Museum, Green Quilts: It's Good to be Green
Contemporary quilts display planet-friendly themes in an exhibition opening Sept. 5 at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The museum, designed to be ecologically sustainable, partnered with the manufacturer of the Mountain Mist corn fiber-based quilt batting product to sponsor the "Crafting a Better Planet" quilt competition. The quilts of the competition finalists are complemented by antique quilts from the museum's collection which show examples of Mountain Mist quilting patterns widely used during the first half of the 20th century. more...

Semester's First Public Night at UNL's Behlen Observatory
The first public night of the fall semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Behlen Observatory will be 7:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 5.
Provided the sky is clear, visitors to the observatory on the grounds of the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead will be able to view a variety of objects with the 30-inch telescope and with smaller telescopes set up outside of the observatory. These include the moon, Jupiter, two kinds of star clusters, double or multiple stars, and the Ring Nebula in Lyra. At various times throughout the evening, members of the observatory staff will give illustrated talks. more...

Encounters At The End Of The World and The Animation Show Year Four Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Encounters At The End Of The World and The Animation Show Year Four. Both films will show through September 11.
Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) confirms his standing as poet laureate of men in extreme situations with Encounters At The End Of The World. In this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer (Oct-Feb). Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from society as one can get.
"The Animation Show," which has put together three previous feature-length collections, started in 2003 with Mike Judge of "Beavis and Butt-head" fame and Oscar-nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt curating, but this year finds Judge solely in control. After last year's somber program, or, as May called it, "a dozen shorts on death," Judge and the producers wanted the show to play lighter and faster. "This year we tried to focus more on comedy," Judge said. "This tour is like the midnight shows I loved to watch [at the International Tourneés of Animation] with a good mix of comedy and shorts that are visually amazing to look at on the big screen."
