Purpose of Labor
Kendall's 'Purpose of Labor' Continues at Sheldon Museum of Art

Gail Kendall, Hixson-Lied professor of art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, presents new ceramic artworks in "The Purpose of Labor," at UNL's Sheldon Museum of Art. Works in the exhibition respond to Robert Bly's translation of "The Kabir Book," ecstatic poems by the Islamic Sufi poet Kabir.

The large chargers in the exhibition represent a new direction in embellishment in Kendall's work. In a gallery guide to the exhibition, Robert Silberman, an associate professor of art history at the University of Minnesota, writes, "Just as Wayne Thiebaud uses paint to create delectable images of cakes and ice cream, Kendall can make glaze and clay look downright tasty, as in the serpentine ribbons of color that encircle her tureens and platters." more...

MARY RIEPMA ROSS MEDIA ARTS CENTER
Trumbo and The Digital Cinema of Jon Jost Play at the Ross

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Trumbo and The Digital Cinema of Jon Jost. All films will show one week only through October 23.

Trumbo is the story of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo's remarkable journey from Hollywood royalty to blacklisted writer to Academy Award winner. Focusing on the writer's own indelible words, the film features performances of some of his extraordinary letters, clips from his films and archival and contemporary interviews with those who knew him best. The film illustrates how one man's unerring belief in the First Amendment and the power of the written word--plus a drink or two--empowered him to fight back after being blacklisted by HUAC. Forced to write underground, letter writing became the chief repository of Trumbo's extraordinary talents, and his letters serve as a wonderfully entertaining testament to his boundless intellect, acerbic humor, and staggering resilience. - Moviefone.

World renowned, self taught film and digital video artist Jon Jost presents a series of work shot in Lincoln and around Nebraska. In 2007, Jost conducted a Media-Artist-in-Residence project, co-sponsored by the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Arts are Basic program, during which he taught digital film/video-making to public school students in the Valentine, Nebraska area and the Lincoln Public Schools. While he was participating in that project, he shot two features and created a video installation piece, all of which (along with others) will be screened.
