Newly Renovated Hillestad Gallery Unveiled in 'Little Black Dress' Exhibit
Beyond the Little Black Dress

Austerity, rebellion, anonymity, power and allurement. These are among the themes presented in the exhibit "Power and Pragmatism: Beyond the Little Black Dress," running through November 6 in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design will unveil its newly renovated gallery and showcase its historic costume collection in an exhibit of black clothing curated by UNL textiles, clothing and design professor Barbara Trout. The exhibit includes 48 garments, the earliest being a lace dress from the late 1860s, and the newest, a sweater designed in 1983 by Japanese deconstructionist fashion designer Rei Kawakubo. more...

The Laramie Project LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS, 7PM
'Laramie Project' Epilogue Premieres at Lied

The Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will bring "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later--An Epilogue," a follow-up of the highly acclaimed "The Laramie Project" to Lincoln Oct. 12. As part of a nationwide endeavor initiated by Tectonic Theatre Project, the play will be performed as a staged reading in more than 100 theaters across the United States and abroad. A local cast will perform the reading at 7 p.m. at the Howell Theatre in the Temple Building, 12th and R streets.

"The Laramie Project" examined the brutal murder of gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyo., and since 2000 has been one of the most performed plays in America. The play was later turned into a film for HBO. Now, the Tectonic Theatre Project presents "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later--An Epilogue," its compelling and groundbreaking follow-up of the original piece that looks at the long-term effects of the murder on the town of Laramie. The epilogue explores how the town has changed and how the murder continues to reverberate throughout the community, including new interviews with Matthew's mother, Judy Shepard, and the murderers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. more...

"This week reminds the UNL community that the power to end violence is in all of our hands," said Jan Deeds, UNL associate director of Gender Programs for Student Involvement and director of the UNL Women's Center. The Women's Center has coordinated Week Without Violence events for more than 10 years, and collaborates with other UNL and Lincoln groups to raise awareness about the affect violence has on all of us, and to empower us to create a safer environment for everyone. more...
