Physicist Aims to Create Magnetized Electron Source

Building a better light bulb, harnessing nuclear fusion or even researching the beginning of life on Earth requires magnetized electrons. To date, creating these special "spin-polarized electrons" is difficult and time-consuming.

UNL physicist Tim Gay is developing a turnkey source of spin-polarized electrons with a $610,000 grant from the National Science Foundation funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 22-26

A week to "Get Real" about your body and health is planned at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Feb. 22-26.

The week begins with the "Pincurl Girls: A Story of Empowerment" by Jen Lukas-Landis at 7 p.m. in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. Lukas-Landis is a local artist and UNL alumna (BFA, 1994; MFA, 2006) who created Pincurl Girls as a project to provide artwork and products that encourage girls of all ages to love, express and believe in themselves. Throughout the week, Students Helping Individuals Nurture Esteem will give presentations at various campus locations. Medici Visiting Artist Series Hosts Szyhalski

The Hixson-Lied and Medici Visiting Artist Series will be presenting a public lecture by multimedia artist, designer, and teacher Piotr Szyhalski at 5.30 p.m. in Richards Hall, room 15. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Szyhalski is a Professor in the Media Arts Department at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he mentors graduate students and teaches a variety of undergraduate courses with an emphasis on interactive and multimedia art. Moving between fine arts (painting, photography, drawing, installation) and design, Szyhalski began producing art on the Internet in 1995, and his award-winning net art and multimedia works have been featured in national and international exhibitions at such venues as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the New York Expo Film Festival, the International Center of Photography in New York City, Siggraph 2000 in New Orleans, and ISEA 2000 in Paris.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Gigante and Crazy Heart. Both films will show through Feb. 25.
