Jeff Raikes to Speak on Philanthropy

Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and benefactor of the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, will address the students of Raikes School beginning at 2 p.m. April 30 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Raikes' talk is titled "The Business of Doing Good." His talk will be streamed live, with links on UNL Today and the Raikes School website.

The 75-minute speech will be a dialogue with the Raikes School students, focusing on Raikes' experience in philanthropy and business. Raikes leads the Gates Foundation's efforts to promote equity for all people around the world. Before joining the foundation, Raikes was a member of Microsoft Corp.'s senior leadership team as president of the Microsoft Business Division. He previously served as group vice president of the Worldwide Sales and Support Group, responsible for providing strategic leadership for Microsoft's sales, marketing and service initiatives. He also served as senior vice president of Microsoft North America.

 

UNL Announces First of Several Fulbrights

Two University of Nebraska-Lincoln students have received prestigious Fulbright grants -- the first of as many as eight that will be received by UNL students this spring. Kevin Healy of Yankton, S.D., will conduct research in Latvia and Jillian Savage of Lincoln will travel to South Korea.

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the program provides funding for students, scholars, teachers and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Moscow Festival Ballet brings 'Sleeping Beauty' to Lied Center

Direct from Russia, the Moscow Festival Ballet will perform the timeless production of "Sleeping Beauty" the under the direction of Sergei Radchenko at 7:30 p.m. April 30 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Tickets are $39, $34 and $29. Students at UNL and other participating colleges with a valid I.D., and youths age 18 and younger, may purchase tickets for half price. Water for Food Conference
International Water for Food Conference in Lincoln May 2-5

Experts from around the world will discuss the challenge of producing more food for an increasing population with limited water supplies at the second international Water for Food conference May 2-5 in Lincoln. Hosted by the University of Nebraska and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the "Water for Food: Growing More with Less" conference will explore the research, policy and educational advances that will help feed a hungry and thirsty world.

Featured speakers will include Pedro Sanchez, the 2002 World Food Prize laureate and director of the Tropical Agriculture and the Rural Environment Program at the Earth Institute at Columbia University; John Briscoe, Harvard University, whose career has focused on water and economic development; David Molden, deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka; Marianne Banziger, deputy director general for research and partnerships at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center; and Jeff Raikes, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. more...

School of Music Presents "A Moonlight Cabaret"

The School of Music will present "A Moonlight Cabaret," a revue featuring advanced musical theatre students at 7:30 p.m., April 30 in Westbrook Recital Hall, room 119. Admission is free.

Alisa Belflower, senior lecturer in music, directs the cabaret-style revue. The music will include everything from jazz and traditional musical comedy to contemporary works and a few premiers. The performers are advanced graduate and undergraduate theatre and voice students.

Clay Club and Print Group Hold Annual Sale

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Clay Club and the Lincoln Print Group will each host their Annual Spring Art Sales on Friday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both sales will be held in Richards Hall on the UNL city campus, across the parking lot from the football stadium.

The print sale will be in Room 121 with the ceramics sale in Room 118, with an artist reception Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. The sales will include works of art created by graduate students, undergraduate students, alumni, and faculty.

'Black Ocean,' at Hillestad Textiles Gallery

"The Black Ocean: Europe-Africa-America," an exhibition of appliqued banner narratives created by French artist William Wilson that document the complicated history of the infamous "triangle trade," will be on display through April 30 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.

A painter, printmaker, sculptor, author and illustrator, Wilson recently journeyed to West Africa, where over a period of nearly two years, he worked with artisans in Abomey, Benin, to create a series of 18 applique fabric panels interpreting the historical narratives of the peoples of West Africa and of the traffic in human cargo that crossed oceans and generations. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Art of The Steal and Neil Young Trunk Show. Neil Young Trunk Show will screen through May 6, while The Art of The Steal will show through May 13.
