Panel Discussion to Focus on Immigration

Three scholars will explore the topic of immigration and what it means to be an American during a Feb. 16 panel discussion.

UNL's Institute for Ethnic Studies will present "Who is an American? Latina/o Immigration, Citizenship and Political Participation in the 21st Century" 12:30-2 p.m. in the Bailey Library, 228 Andrews Hall. The event, designed to engage faculty, students, staff and the public, will include a question-and-answer session. more....

Olson Seminar examines 'Avians and Indians'

Birds and their relationships to humans is the topic of the Feb. 16 Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies at UNL.

Thomas C. Gannon, associate professor of English and ethnic studies at UNL, will speak from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Great Plains Art Museum. The seminar and a 3 p.m. reception at the museum are free and open to the public. more....

Bookstore Hosts 'Breaking Into the Backcountry' Signing

Steve Edwards

Steve Edwards, a lecturer in the UNL Department of English, will read from and discuss his book "Breaking into the Backcountry" at 7 p.m., Feb. 16 in the University Bookstore. A book signing will follow.

Edwards won a writing contest in 2001 earning a prize of seven months of "unparalleled solitude" as caretaker of a 92-acre homestead along the Rogue National Wild and Scenic River in southwestern Oregon. Recently divorced and humbled by the prospect of so much time alone, Edwards left behind his job as a college English teacher in Indiana and headed west to a cabin in the Klamath Mountains. more...

Water Seminar Series Continues Feb. 16

The UNL Water Center's spring lecture seminar series continues with a Feb. 16 presentation by Vic Claassen, associate professional researcher at the University of California, Davis. The lecture, "Regenerating Hydrologic Function of Degraded Soils Through Revegetation," is 3:30 p.m. in the Hardin Hall Auditorium.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The series offers lectures at 3:30 p.m. every Wednesday (except March 23) through April 27 in Hardin Hall.

Seminar Explores National Academic Awards

Career Services and Undergraduate Studies are offering "Exploring Elite Opportunities," an online seminar with author Donald Asher. The seminar is 2:30 p.m., Feb. 16 in the Nebraska Union.

Asher's presentation will include information on some of the nation's most prestigious academic and experiential awards - including the Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright scholarships. He will also discuss summer research programs, internships and service opportunities. Information will also be presented on resources for international students, how to write compelling personal statements, keys to eye-catching resumes and how to obtain strong letters of recommendation.

Campus Rec Offers Free Nutrition Sessions

Campus Rec is offering two nutrition-related presentations on Feb. 16 and 17. Both presentations are free for UNL students and Campus Rec members. Admission for all others is $6.

On Feb. 16 the session "Never Say Never" will be offered in the Campus Rec Center, room 230. The presentation will featuring information on how individuals can eat what they love and how to choose correct food portions. more...
