Chemical Engineering Student Earns Goldwater Scholarship

Jeffrey Lopez, a junior studying chemical engineering, has been awarded a 2011 Goldwater Scholarship. The nationally competitive scholarship of up to $7,500 per year is awarded to students preparing for careers in science, engineering and mathematics. This year, 275 scholars were selected from 1,095 applicants.

Lopez plans to go to graduate school, where he will likely study materials science. He said he hopes the Goldwater Scholarship will open doors for his post-graduation plans. "The eventual goal is that I will be able to gain a faculty position at a research institution," he said. more...

 

Kelly to Receive Sorensen Award

William Kelly

William Kelly will be honored with the Thomas C. Sorensen Award for Distinguished Nebraska Journalism from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications on April 8. Kelly oversees development, research and writing of television documentaries and radio news features for NET Television and Radio, Nebraska's public broadcasting service.

Kelly's documentary, "CSI On Trial," follows one of the most controversial crimes in Nebraska history involving two innocent men facing the death penalty for a murder they didn't commit. Michael Mann

One of the country's leading climate scientists, Michael Mann, will present public talks on climate change April 7 and 8 at UNL. Mann is the director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center, and was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007.

Mann will give a talk at 7:30 p.m., April 7, based on his 2008 book, "Dire Predictions: Understanding Global Warming," co-authored with colleague Lee Kump. The lecture will be in the Hardin Hall auditorium. Refreshments will be provided. Parking is free. more...

University Theatre presents 'Twelfth Night'

University Theatre completes its season with William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." The production opens at 7:30 p.m., April 7 in the Temple Building's Studio Theatre. It is directed by Ian Borden, assistant professor.

Set in the Old West in Illyria, the production is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies of mistaken identity and love triangles. Twins Viola and Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck. Masquerading as a young boy in Duke Orsino's household, Viola finds herself in the hilarious web of the duke's relationship with Olivia and her various suitors. more...

April 8 is Last Day to Withdraw From Courses

The last day for students to withdraw from full-semester courses in the spring 2011 term is April 8. A withdrawal from a class means the course is dropped but students will get a "W" for a grade. There is no impact on grade point average if a student withdraws from a class.

Withdraws may affect scholarships, financial aid and other related issues. Student advisers should be prepared to provide this information to students.
