Think Tank Registration Deadine is May 25
Think Tank 2011

The fifth annual "Think Tank" conference is June 2 at North Star High School. The conference is designed for campus communicators. The application deadline is May 25.

The conference theme is "Think Big." Registration begins at 8 a.m., with a 9 a.m. keynote presentation by Rwitti Roy of Purdue University. Other sessions include: a branding case study by Heather Swain, Michigan State University; social media presentation by Sree Sreenivasan, Columbia University; "Making a Visual Impact," by Chris Ervin, VelocityApeFX; "Social and Brand Engagement" by Clint Runge, Archrival; and a cause marketing for audience engagement presentation. Kiowa Photographer Poolaw is Focus of Spring Great Plains Quarterly

In the spring issue of Great Plains Quarterly, an academic journal published by the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, researchers wrote about Kiowa photographer Horace Poolaw and his contributions to American Indian history and art history.

In "Some Thoughts on 'Taking' Pictures: Imaging 'Indians' and the Counter-Narratives of Visual Sovereignty," Morgan F. Bell, a master's degree candidate at the University of Washington, discusses how late 19th- and early 20th-century photographs of American Indians forged stereotypical ideals of Indians. Lincoln's Elena Shomos Wins Boren Scholarship Trip to Albania

University of Nebraska-Lincoln senior and Lincoln native Elena Shomos will travel to Albania later this year on a Boren Scholarship to conduct research and learn the Albanian language.

Shomos, who has majors in French and international studies and a minor in political science, expects to graduate in August 2012. She will leave for her nine-month trip in early September. Read more...

 

'Carlos' Opens at the Ross, 'Greatest Movie Ever Sold' Continues
Carlos

The five-and-a-half-hour film "Carlos," which offers the definitive portrait of the international terrorist Carlos the Jackal, opens May 20 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also continuing for a second week at the Ross is Morgan Spurlock's "Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold."

Directed by arthouse favorite Olivier Assayas, "Carlos" is a biopic of the ultra-left wing Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, popularly known as "Carlos the Jackal." The role of Sanchez is played by Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez. The film is shown in three parts. Read more on Today@UNL.
