In the days leading up to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's entry into the Big Ten Conference on July 1, the Athletic Department's Randy York is posting a series of 10 N-Sider columns. This Countdown to the Big Ten series will culminate with an N-Sider on Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany on July 1. UNL technology powers Nebraska solar panel startup
NUtech Ventures at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Rare Earth Solar, a new Nebraska company, have announced an exclusive license agreement expected to lead to the development of breakthrough solar panel technology made with rare earth elements. Rare Earth Solar will be the first solar panel manufacturer in Nebraska.
Chin Li "Barry" Cheung, assistant professor of chemistry at UNL, and his then-doctoral student Joseph Brewer developed the patent-pending technology, which replaces the typical semiconductor materials now used in solar cell manufacture with rare earth elements. Read more in the full press release.
Big Ten celebration is 9 a.m., July 1
A celebration of UNL's official entry into the Big Ten Conference starts at 9 a.m., July 1 in the Van Brunt Visitors Center. The event is free and open to faculty, staff, students and the public.
Governor Dave Heineman will deliver a proclamation. Chancellor Harvey Perlman is scheduled to speak.

Morrill Hall's 'Wildlife and Nature' amateur photo exhibit opens July 1
The University of Nebraska State Museum will open its third annual "Wildlife and Nature" amateur photography exhibit July 1 on the third floor of Morrill Hall, south of 14th and Vine streets on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus.
Amateur photographers from across Nebraska submitted entries this spring as part of the museum's year-long 140th anniversary celebration. More than 350 images of birds, mammals, plant life, other wildlife, natural landscapes, and people interacting with nature will be showcased for museum visitors to enjoy. The exhibit will remain on display through Labor Day. The Grand Prize winning photo was "My Rose!" by David Ruwe of Hooper.
