'Mr. Baseball' to present Carson Lecture

Bob Uecker
Bob Uecker, former Major League Baseball player, sportscaster, comedian and actor known as "Mr. Baseball," will present the next Carson Lecture. The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film will host the second Johnny Carson Lecture at 3:30 p.m., Nov. 4 in the Howell Theatre. The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film Director Paul Steger and retired WOWT Sports Director Dave Webber will visit with Uecker about his nearly 60-year career in sports, broadcasting and entertainment. Video clips will also highlight his career. Read more about this lecture on Today@UNL.

'NaturePalooza Nebraska' to explore state's wildlife
The University of Nebraska State Museum and the School of Natural Resources will host "NaturePalooza Nebraska" from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Nov. 6 at Morrill Hall. The event provides a day of discovery and hands-on activities throughout the museum.
Stations will be staffed by the school's faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. Activities and games will help visitors better understand Nebraska's rich natural resources and ways to help protect them. Read more about this event on Today@UNL.

Building Energy Consumption portal launches
Faculty, staff and students can help UNL reach energy consumption goals by visiting the Building Energy Consumption website. The portal shows energy usage by month and by commodity in individual buildings on campus for the last 12 months.
In fiscal year 2009-2010, UNL's total energy expenditures were $17.3 million. Between 2000 and 2009, energy consumption of state funded university buildings dropped by 21 percent, while building area increased by more than 840,000 square feet. Read more about this project on Today@UNL.

OASIS hosts Día de los Muertos celebration
The Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services will host a Día de los Muertos celebration at 6:15 p.m., Nov. 4 in the Nebraska Union Centennial Room. The event includes include a performance by Mariachi Zapata, a traditional mariachi band from Omaha. The celebration is free and open to the public.
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by other cultures around the world. The holiday focuses on family and friends gathering to pray and to remember those who have died.

ST. MARKS ON THE CAMPUS, FRI 7:30PMChiara duo to perform Bach's violin, cello solos
Chiara String Quartet members Hye Yung Julie Yoon and Gregory Beaver will perform J.S. Bach's "Complete Works for Unaccompanied Violin and Cello" in a four-concert series. The first concert is 7:30 p.m., Nov. 4 at St. Mark's on the Campus Episcopal Church, 13th and R streets. The series is free.
The opening performance will feature Sonata No. 1 in G minor and Partita No. 1 in B minor for Solo Violin and Suite No. 5 in C minor for Solo Cello. The performances are free and open to the public. Other concert dates (all 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark's on the Campus) are Nov. 10, Feb. 28 and March 1.

Swiss curator Wick to discuss 'Brancusi-Serra' exhibit

Princess X by Constantin Brancusi
Oliver Wick, curator at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehn/Basel, Switzerland, will give a public lecture at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 4 at the Sheldon Museum of Art. Wick is curator of the exhibition "Brancusi-Serra," currently exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The exhibition includes Brancusi's sculpture "Princess X," on loan from Sheldon.
The exhibition "Brancusi-Serra" is one of the most ambitious exhibitions to date on the work of Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) and Richard Serra (1938), two of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. According to Wick: "Princess X is one of the most important works in the exhibition."
