The University of Nebraska State Museum's next Sunday with a Scientist program for children and families will explore viruses. The program is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Nov. 20 at Morrill Hall.
With assistance from scientists in UNL's Nebraska Center for Virology, visitors to Sunday with a Scientist will explore how viruses develop, multiply, interact with hosts and affect our lives. The event will be led by virologists Anisa Kaenjak Angeletti, whose research focuses on human herpes simplex virus, and Peter Angeletti, who specializes in the research of human papillomavirus. During the coming holidays, thoughts turn to family, food, and finding enough time to fit everything in. Food safety may take a back seat as we take short cuts, prepare foods ahead, cook late into the night, and host numerous holiday feasts.

Huskers collect Toys for Tots donations
Donations for the annual U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Drive will be collected during four Cornhusker athletic events between Nov. 18 and Nov. 25. Fans can donate new, unwrapped toys or cash during the games. Marines will be stationed at each venue to accept donations.
Toys for Tots donations will be accepted during the Nov. 18 women's basketball game with No. 23 University of Southern California at the Devaney Center; the Nov. 19 volleyball match with Wisconsin at the Coliseum; the Nov. 23 men's basketball game against Oregon at the Devaney Center; and the Nov. 25 Heroes Game with Iowa at Memorial Stadium.

Methodology expert to address coding video data

Frances Chumney
The Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools will open its 2011-2012 Research Methodology Series with a presentation from CYFS statistics and measurement consultant Frances Chumney. Chumney will present "Data Collection via Video: An Introduction to Software for Coding Research Videos" 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 18 in 242 Mabel Lee Hall.
The presentation will outline the advantages and challenges of collecting data from video recordings, along with important considerations in the development of coding schemes for video data collection. In addition to summarizing some of the most common and flexible software available, Chumney will demonstrate select software using examples from real research data.

'Martha Marcy May Marlene' opens at the Ross
The powerful psychological thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene", starring Elizabeth Olsen, opens today at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also continuing to show at the Ross is "Take Shelter."
Showing through Dec. 1, "Martha Marcy May Marlene" tells the story of Martha, a young woman rapidly unraveling amidst her attempt to reclaim a normal life after fleeing from a cult and it's charismatic leader. Seeking help from her estranged older sister and brother-in-law, Martha is unable and unwilling to reveal the truth about her disappearance. When her memories trigger a chilling paranoia that cult members could still be pursuing her, the line between Martha's reality and delusion begins to blur.
