Kunkel named managing editor of Prairie Schooner

The Prairie Schooner, the literary quarterly of the Department of English, has named a new managing editor, Marianne Kunkel, a third-year Ph.D. student in poetry.

Kunkel specializes in women's and gender studies at UNL and takes over the post full time after serving as the publication's interim managing editor for six months. She has a master of fine arts degree from the University of Florida. Read more about Kunkel and the Prairie Schooner on Today@UNL.

 

Edwards named director of Center for Great Plains Studies

Richard Edwards

Richard Edwards has been named director of the Center for Great Plains Studies, a university-wide interdisciplinary research center. The announcement was made Nov. 18 by David Manderscheid, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Edwards is a fellow of the center, professor of economics and former Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He replaces James Stubbendieck, who served as director for 12 years and recently retired as professor of agronomy. Read more about Edwards and the Center for Great Plains Studies on Today@UNL.

Chiara String Quartet to present Hixson-Lied Concert

The Chiara String Quartet will present the next concert in the Hixson-Lied Concert Series at 7:30 p.m., in Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $10 for seniors and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Box Office, 402-472-4747, or at the door.

The Chiara String Quartet is Rebecca Fischer and Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello. The Chiara have been in residence in the UNL School of Music since 2005. Their Nov. 29 program includes Mozart's "String Quartet in G Major, K. 387;" the Nebraska premiere of Hans Tutschku's "Behind the Light for quartet and electronics;" and Debussy's "String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10."

Princeton University Press has published "The 1970s: A New Global History from Civil Rights to Economic Inequality" by Thomas "Tim" Borstelmann, the E.N. and Katherine Thompson Professor of Modern World History at UNL.

This new, prominent interpretation of the 1970s illuminates the combination of social egalitarianism and free-market principles that have shaped American and world history ever since. Read more about this book on Today@UNL.

Nelson to highlight the value of opposing views during lecture

W. Don Nelson, publisher of Prairie Fire newspaper, will present "Civil Discourse: The good, the bad, the ugly," at 7 p.m. in the Hardin Hall Auditorium. The talk, sponsored by the School of Natural Resources, is free and open to the public.

Among the issues he cited that would benefit from civil discourse are climate change and siting the Keystone XL pipeline. Read more about this lecture on Today@UNL.
