Credit card use depends on what you know — and what you think you know
To manage credit cards efficiently, it goes without saying that it's important to have a firm understanding of finance. But equally important to good credit-card practices is what you think you know about finance, a national study shows.
UNL economists Sam Allgood and William Walstad used a data set that measures Americans' financial knowledge on two fronts — how much they actually know and also how much they perceive themselves to know — to examine how that affected their use and management of credit cards. UNL in the national news: November 2011
National media outlets featured and cited UNL sources on a number of topics in the past month. Appearances in national media included:
Donna Dudney, finance, was quoted Nov. 30 by the New York Times about Warren Buffett's plan to buy the Omaha World-Herald. Her comments also appeared at Poynter Online and the Christian Science Monitor.
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts was the subject of several articles when it announced Nov. 5 that the John W. Carson Foundation would establish a new $1 million scholarship fund for Nebraska students. Coverage included Variety, StageDirections, and an Associated Press article that appeared nationwide.
Annual Poinsettia Sale is Dec. 7-8
The UNL Horticulture Club will sell poinsettia plants from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Dec. 7 and 8 in the Nebraska and East unions. An assortment of sizes and colors are available, including classic red, pink, marble and white.
The plants are cultivated from seedlings by the club's members and the annual holiday sale serves as a fund-raiser for the organization.
Chambers receives homeless coalition partner award

Jeff Chambers
Jeff Chambers, UNL Center on Children, Families and the Law, received the 2011 Community Partner Award from the Lincoln Homeless Coalition. The award was presented in November.
Chambers has been a long-time leader in the Homeless Coalition's growth from a fairly informal group, to a sophisticated organization that can provide detailed communitywide information on a variety of data related to homelessness, the coalition said. He was instrumental to Lincoln meeting HUD's mandate to use an HMIS system. Read more about this award in Today@UNL.
