University nets 200+ positive national media placements in 2011

UNL regularly made its way into national news headlines in 2011. National media outlets, often working with the Office of University Communications, featured and cited UNL research and programming and sought out UNL faculty expertise on a wide range of topics. More than 200 positive story appearances, which translated into thousands of news headlines and articles in media outlets across the nation and globe, were registered last year.

Highlights included regular UNL expertise on U.S. drought and climate as well as the political and environmental debate surrounding the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline and the Ogallala Aquifer; how to confront bullying in schools, the university's July 1 move to the Big Ten Conference; and significant new contributions from UNL's digital humanities faculty. Quilt Museum features 'Tribute to Ardis James'

The International Quilt Study Center and Museum will present the exhibition "A Tribute to Ardis James" from Jan. 6 through July 29. Quilts created by many of today's top studio quilt artists and donated in honor of James will be shown.

James, with her husband Robert, collected and donated the first 1,000 quilts that provided the impetus for the establishment of the International Quilt Study Center in 1997. Their vision and continuing generous support made possible the new museum building, which opened in 2008. Read more about this exhibit on Today@UNL.

UNL, Nebraska Nova save the Industrial Arts Building

Planners at Nebraska Innovation Campus today unveiled a new look and usage plan for the Industrial Arts Building, a historic structure at the former Nebraska State Fair Park. A design concept approved by the Nebraska Innovation Campus Development Corp. maintains the historic footprint and external facade of the 99-year-old building while enabling advanced greenhouse space to be developed on the second floor.

Consultants and planners for Nebraska Innovation Campus had recommended the brick-and-steel trapezoidal-shaped 1913 structure be razed to make way for development at the campus. In response to concerns about the planned demolition expressed by historic preservationists, the university initially issued a request for proposals for the building's redevelopment that failed to attract proposals with financing. In June, Nebraska Nova Development LLC was contracted to carry out the first phase of development for Innovation Campus. That plan included four new or renovated buildings representing an estimated $80 million in public and private investments. Read more about this design on Today@UNL.
