NEBRASKA UNION AUDITORIUM, 7PMAstronaut Kelly to deliver Hoagland Lecture
Astronaut and U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, who flew four missions aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, including one as commander on its last mission, will reveal insights from the remarkable journeys he has made in his career and personal life when he speaks at UNL. His appearance is part of the Peter J. Hoagland Integrity in Public Service Lecture Series.
Kelly will speak at 7 p.m. in the Nebraska Union auditorium. His lecture, "Endeavor to Succeed," is free and open to the public with a limited number of seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Read more about this lecture in Today@UNL.

$25 million USDA grant announced
UNL will lead a $25 million project to reduce throughout the beef production chain the occurrence of E. coli strains that pose a major threat to public health.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture announced the grant today and will celebrate, along with UNL researchers and other collaborators and administrators, at a public reception 1 p.m. at Hardin Hall. Today, Thinkers & Tinkerers will be held at Nebraska Educational Television, 1800 N. 33rd St. Technology Agent Cheryl Barts will discuss the “Anatomy of a Patent.” Thinkers & Tinkerers is a monthly series hosted by NUtech Ventures staff members discussing a variety of issues related to innovation and entrepreneurship. Sessions are at noon with lunch provided to the first 40 people who attend each session.
Presentations are scheduled monthly in 2012. A list of speakers and topics, along with a live web feed of the talk are available on the Thinkers and & Tinkerers website.

Funnell-Harris to lead off Plant Pathology seminars

Deanna Funnell-Harris
Deanna Funnell-Harris, USDA-ARS Research Plant Pathologist in the UNL Plant Pathology department, will present "The Role of Phenylpropanoid Pathway Metabolites in Resistance of Sorghum to Pathogens" at 4 p.m., Jan. 23, in 264 Keim Hall. All are welcome. This is the first talk of the semester in the Plant Pathology Seminar series.
Funnell-Harris works in association with a sorghum geneticist to provide sorghum cultivars utilizable for the energy industry, for animal production or for food-grade sorghum. Read more about this seminar in Today@UNL.
