Schreiber earns 'LiveBIG' scholarship for service to others

UNL junior Mindy Schreiber has been awarded a Big Ten Network LiveBIG Scholarship for Outstanding Service. The award was presented during halftime of the Feb. 29 Husker men's basketball game at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The $1,000 scholarship is part of the network's original series, BTN LiveBIG, which celebrates Big Ten students and alumni who exemplify what it means to "live big" through service to others. Read more about this award on Today@UNL.

INTERNATIONAL QUILT STUDY CENTER & MUSEUM, FRI 5:30PM

Lecture to open National Quilting Month celebration

The International Quilt Study Center and Museum is celebrating National Quilting Month in March with a number of activities. The celebration opens with a 5:30 p.m., March 2 lecture by Ellen Rushman, a quilt studies graduate student. The lecture, "Modern Quilting: DIY (Do It Yourself) Discourse," is based on Rushman's research into the Modern Quilt Guild, a group of quilters who make modern quilts. Rushman has spent the last year interviewing 26 members of seven MQG chapters across the United States. The research project is supported by a grant from the Lincoln Quilters Guild. Big Red Road Show CENTURYLINK CENTER, SUN 1 - 3:30PM

Big Red Road Show celebrates 10th year

UNL will host its 10th annual Big Red Road Show at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 4. The road show will spotlight more than 75 interactive exhibits with displays of star-studded alumni and will honor UNL's past through research, academics and athletics, while sharing opportunities for student discovery, academic excellence and student life at the state's Big Ten Conference university.

The theme, marking 10 years of recruiting the best and brightest students from Omaha at the road show, is "Honor the Past; Build the Future." Admission is free. Read more about Big Red Road Show in Today@UNL.

 

Grant Writing Proposals

'Write Winning Grant Proposals' seminar is March 16

UNL faculty can hone grant writing skills at a seminar, "Write Winning Grant Proposals," 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 16 in the Nebraska Union auditorium. Sponsored by the Office of Research and Economic Development, this free seminar is primarily for UNL faculty. Other staff, postdoctoral research fellows and graduate students are welcome to attend without charge as space allows. Advance online registration is required.

The seminar comprehensively addresses practical and conceptual aspects important to the proposal writing process. The session emphasizes idea development, identification of appropriate granting agencies, and tips and strategies for presenting an applicant's case to reviewers. David Morrison, co-founder of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, will lead the session. Read more about this session in Today@UNL.

Water seminar to explore SWAT model

Texas A&M professor Raghavan Srinivasan will discuss the soil and water assessment tool in a free lecture on March 2. The talk, "Review of Water Quantity and Quality Applications of the SWAT Model in the USA," is 11 a.m. to noon in the Scott Engineering Center, room 111.

The soil and water assessment tool has been successfully applied and accepted worldwide as a means of assessing water quality and quantity. The SWAT model was developed jointly by the USDA-ARS and the Texas A&M University system over the past four decades. The model was first released in 1992, and since then it has gained significant momentum in development and adaptation around the world with more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications published to date.
