UNL in the national news: February 2012
National media outlets featured and cited UNL sources on a number of topics in the past month. Appearances in national media included:
Ross Secord, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, had his research into how prehistoric global warming affected the evolution of equine ancestor sifrhippus covered by scores of major media outlets on Feb. 23. Highlights included articles in the New York Times, TIME, Scientific American, Science Magazine, Popular Science, US News & World Report and Bloomberg. The article was translated into dozens of languages and appeared across the globe.
Matt Waite, journalism, appeared in several media outlets in February about the emergence of drone journalism in the United States. Appearances included: Feb. 21 on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation; Feb. 27 in a national Associated Press story that ran in dozens of media outlets across the country; and Feb. 22 on the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU in Washington, D.C.

Health care reform law topic of March 6 brown bag

Colleen Medill
Law professor Colleen Medill will lead a brown bag discussion on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act at noon, March 6 in the College of Law Auditorium. The session is free and open to the public.
The presentation will include information on the ramifications the health care reform law has on insurance coverage, as well as the controversial constitutional issues. Oral arguments concerning the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are schedule to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court during the last week of March.
Lunch will not be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.
At half-way point, UNL in top 10 percent in Recyclemania
Halfway through the national college Recyclemania contest, UNL ranks in the top 10 percent of participants and leads its Big Ten colleagues in at least one category.
Recyclemania is a friendly competition pitting 605 universities in the United States and Canada in an effort to promote recycling. The contest measures waste, recycled paper, recycled cardboard, and recycled plastics. The eight-week contest began Feb. 5. After two weeks, UNL was ranked 56 and led the seven Big Ten universities that are participating. Read more about Recyclemania in Today@UNL.
Huskers Host K-State in Home Opener
The Nebraska baseball team (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten) hosts its 2012 home opener at 2:05 p.m. against Kansas State at Hawks Field. It will be the first of 17 straight home games for the Huskers, as they will cap the homestand with a return trip by the Wildcats on Tuesday, March 27.
Season and single-game tickets can be purchased at Huskers.com, by calling 1-800-8BIGRED or by visiting the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office across the street from Memorial Stadium. The Huskers are also offering a nine-game ticket deal this season. Named the "Diamond-Deal" fans can pick any nine of the Huskers' 31 home games and have the same seat for all nine games. SHELDON MUSEUM OF ART, 5PM
'Art of Collaboration' discussion is today
The Sheldon Museum of Art will open a community conversation about bridging the arts and humanities, 5 to 7 p.m., at the museum. The free, public event is held in association with the exhibition "Partners and Adversaries: The Art of Collaboration." The program for "Partners and Adversaries: A Community Conversation in Three Parts," begins at 5:30 p.m.
A panel of experts will facilitate conversations on the risks, rewards, and challenges of government sponsorship of the arts, public art education, and professional collaboration in the arts. The panel will include Shari Hofschire, director of the Center for Innovation in Arts Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha; Christopher Maly, educator and playwright; Janet Farber, director of the Philip Schrager Collection of Contemporary Art in Omaha; and Michael Krainak, art critic, writer, and educator.
