Hoffman selected for Fulbright to teach in South Korea

Alanna Hoffman, an international studies major, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship. The San Diego native will travel to South Korea with her Fulbright to teach English for a year.

Traveling abroad is nothing new to Hoffman, who has completed three separate study abroad semesters to Costa Rica, Taiwan and Japan. She spent the summer of 2011 in Taiwan participating in a Mandarin language immersion program and serving as an ambassador for Nebraska in the Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance Summer Scholarship Program. She spent the ensuing fall semester studying in Japan.

"I cannot diminish the importance studying abroad has had on my education," Hoffman said. "I have learned about other cultures, discovered new passions and felt inspired to continually challenge myself." Read more about Hoffman and this Fulbright in Today@UNL.

April 15 'Sunday with a Scientist' explores food microbiology

The University of Nebraska State Museum's next Sunday with a Scientist program for children and families will focus on the science of food microbiology. The program is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., April 15 at Morrill Hall.

"Food microbes: Good, Bad, and Ugly" will be presented by assistant professor Heather Hallen-Adams of UNL's Department of Food Science and Technology. Visitors will learn about good and bad food microbes, the difference between fungi and bacteria and why those details matter. Read more about Sunday Scientist in Today@UNL.

'Lost Bohemia,' 'In Darkness' play at The Ross

"In Darkness," the Academy Award-nominated film about Polish Jews hiding during Nazi occupation, and "Lost Bohemia," a documentary about artists who lived in Carnegie Hall studios, open today at the Ross. The director and producer of "Lost Bohemia" will present a movie talk at 7:30 p.m., April 13.

Astor and producer Jody Shields will attend the 7:30 p.m., April 13 screening of "Lost Bohemia." The duo will introduce the film and participate in a question and answer session following the screening. Shields is originally from Lincoln and is a UNL alumna. Water Seminar lecture to focus on hydroinformatics

The Water Seminar Series continues with "Hydroinformatics: Optimization and Uncertainties of Integrating Data, Models and Decisions," 11 a.m., April 13 in the Walter Scott Engineering Center, room 111.

The presentation will be led by Dimitri Solomatine, professor of hydroinformatics at the UNESCO Institute for Water Education. Lectures in the series are free and open to the public. Read more about this lecture in Today@UNL.

Dairy Store grill-out features P.O. Pears burgers

The Dairy Store renews its summer tradition of grilling traditional P.O. Pears burgers and hosting a jazz band on the green space south of the Food Industry complex. The event will take place from noon to 1 p.m., April 13.

P.O. Pears was a well-known Lincoln restaurant that closed in 2008. However, its burgers live on with the secret recipe still intact. Read more about this grill out in Today@UNL.

Dawes selected for Guggenheim Fellowship

Kwame Dawes, professor of English and Glenna Luschei Editor of Prairie Schooner, has received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He is among 181 scholars, artists and scientists in the United States and Canada who were selected for the honor from nearly 3,000 applicants.

The fellowship will support his work on the poem cycle, "August: A Quintet," which is based on the work of August Wilson, an American playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner whose work illustrated the African-American experience in the 20th century. Read more about this fellowship in Today@UNL.

 

Big Red Weekend

Alumni present Big Red Weekend

The Nebraska Alumni Association is offering Big Red Weekend, UNL's annual spring homecoming April 13-14. A variety of events, including lectures, performances, the Red-White spring football game at 1 p.m. April 14, and other athletic contests are planned across campus for the celebration.

In addition, four groups are planning reunions and special alumni events, including the Alumni of Color, University Libraries former student employees, Love Memorial Hall alumnae, and Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Read more about Big Red Weekend in Today@UNL.

UNL launches Nebraska App

UNL has launched the Nebraska App, a suite of mobile applications that makes essential university resources available on mobile devices. Students can check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. They can access the public directory and get in touch instantly, keep tabs on Husker sports, find places on the campus map, stay informed with the latest campus news, watch videos, and even listen to podcasts of popular lectures in iTunesU.

"UNL is moving services to the where the students are in terms of devices and network access"," said Mark Askren, Chief Information Officer. "Students now have a much more powerful connection to UNL via their mobile device." Read more about Nebraska App in Today@UNL.
