Jazz in June

Jazz in June lineup announced

Keyboardist Lao Tizer and his group, TIZER, open the Jazz in June season June 5 with their eclectic blend of jam-based world music, jazz and contemporary fusion. Organized by the Sheldon Art Association and Sheldon Museum of Art, the free concerts take place every Tuesday in June at 7 p.m. with activities beginning as early as 5 p.m.

The 21st season of Jazz in June will also feature two UNL-based groups — the Darryl White Group and UNL Faculty Jazz Ensemble. The Darryl White Group will perform with guest artist Bobby Watson on June 12. The UNL Faculty Jazz Ensemble with guest vocalist Jackie Allen performs June 19. The season concludes June 26 with saxophonist and composer Will Donato. Read more about Jazz in June in Today@UNL.

Sunday with a Scientist to explore world of honeybees

The University of Nebraska State Museum's next Sunday with a Scientist program will explore the world of honeybees. The family-friendly program is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., May 20 at Morrill Hall. Entomology professor Marion Ellis will lead the program.

Honeybees serve a very important purpose in the environment. There are 95 crops grown in the United States that depend on bee visits to set fruit or produce seed. The wild honeybee population has declined dramatically in recent years. Read more about this program in Today@UNL.

Le Sueur to lead May 20 'Monsieur Lazhar' movie talk

The captivating "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and the Academy Award-nominated drama "Monsieur Lazhar" open Friday at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. A movie talk about "Monsieur Lazhar" is 3 p.m., May 20."The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" is rated PG-13 and runs through June 7; "Monsieur Lazhar" is rated PG-13 and runs through May 31.

The 3 p.m., May 20 movie talk on "Monsieur Lazhar" will be led by James Le Sueur, a UNL professor of history. The talk, which is free and open to the public, follows the 1:15 p.m. showing of the movie. Admission to the film is at regular Ross prices. Read more about these films at the Ross website.

Ravi Sohi

Sohi receives national marketing honor

Ravi Sohi, associate dean of graduate programs and research in the College of Business Administration, has been awarded the 2012 Louis W. Stern Award by the American Marketing Association.

UNL alumna Jean Johnson and Penn State University's Rajdeep Grewall were co-authors on the article that earned the award. "We are honored to receive this award," Sohi said. "The past winners have included some very big names in the field of marketing." Read more about this honor in Today@UNL.

 

Campus Rec named a bicycle-friendly business

Bike-friendly

The League of American Bicyclists has named UNL Campus Recreation a Silver Level Bicycle-Friendly Business. The league named 67 new Bicycle-Friendly Businesses in spring 2012. More than 400 businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the United States have received the award.

The honor will be celebrated during a Bike to Work Week ice cream social, 4:30 to 6 p.m., May 18 at the Jane Snyder Trails Center, 250 N. 21st St. Read more about this award in Today@UNL.

 

Nebraska App

UNL launches Nebraska App

UNL has launched the Nebraska App, a suite of mobile applications that makes essential university resources available on mobile devices. Students can check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. They can access the public directory and get in touch instantly, keep tabs on Husker sports, find places on the campus map, stay informed with the latest campus news, watch videos, and even listen to podcasts of popular lectures in iTunesU.

"UNL is moving services to the where the students are in terms of devices and network access"," said Mark Askren, Chief Information Officer. "Students now have a much more powerful connection to UNL via their mobile device." Read more about Nebraska App in Today@UNL.
