UNL study scrutinizes worker dignity at Foxconn, Apple plants

In the global controversy that followed a rash of worker suicides at Foxconn Technology Group — the Taiwanese company whose huge Chinese factories assemble the world's most popular consumer electronics — the firm and corporate partners such as Apple repeatedly invoked the notion of safeguarding employees' dignity.
For lasting change, Foxconn could provide legitimate paths to worker dignity - by limiting verbal abuse and developing management and discipline practices that help employees save face. Perhaps most importantly, it can improve employees' lives away from work, said Kristen Lucas, a UNL assistant professor of communication studies and lead author of the study. Students take first in national advertising competition

Advertising students from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications earned first place in the 2012 National Student Advertising Competition, June 2-5 in Austin, Texas. A total of 153 student teams from across the United States competed in the program, which is sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. Only 19 of those 153 teams advanced to nationals.
The competition challenged students to develop a fully integrated marketing campaign to help Nissan build awareness and lasting favorability among African-American, Hispanic and Chinese-American millennial consumers in the United States. UNL has finished first in districts and contended for the national title for the past four years. UNL competes in District 9, which represents clubs and American Advertising Federations in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.Read more about this competition in Today@UNL.

Security breach may have included employee data
On Wednesday night, May 23, a security breach of the Nebraska Student Information System, the university-wide student information system, was detected. NeSIS contains Social Security numbers and date of birth for all employees. When the initial announcement was made Friday evening, it was unclear that employee data was included.
At this time, we have no direct evidence that this information was downloaded and we have no reports of identity theft stemming from this breach. We are working with an outside security firm to help analyze the level of risk of personal information being misappropriated and to make recommendations for any additional safeguards that are needed.
