Nastasi earns $980K grant to develop nuclear reactor composites

Mike Nastasi, director of the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research at UNL, had one of 13 projects selected recently by the U.S. Department of Energy to improve nuclear reactor safety, performance and cost competitiveness.

Nastasi received a $980,000 DOE grant for the project exploring development of advanced metal and ceramic composites that could lead to safer and more efficient electricity production in advanced nuclear reactors. He will team up with researchers at MIT and Texas A&M to develop the material. Read more about this grant in Today@UNL.

 

Independent Study High School student to compete in Olympics

Chloe Sutton, a student in UNL's Independent Study High School, is competing in the London 2012 Summer Olympic games. Sutton, who is participating in her second Olympics, represents the United States in the 400-meter freestyle swim. She qualified for Team U.S.A. at the swim trials in Omaha with a personal-best swim of 4 minutes, 4.18 seconds.

In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Sutton recorded a 22nd-place finish in the 10K open water swimming marathon. When Sutton swims the 400m freestyle on July 14, she will become the first U.S. Olympian to compete in both pool and open water events. Extension offers drought resources website

UNL Extension has created a new drought resources website that offers resources from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and others for dealing with drought in the region.

"As we Nebraskans know, our weather brings new challenges every year," said Kathleen Lodl, UNL Extension associate dean. "Last year it was flooding, this year it's drought. UNL Extension has a deep wealth of research-based, unbiased expertise, and our new website will give Nebraskans quick, easy access to that expertise." Read more about this website in Today@UNL.

Gates to lead 'Last Call of the Oasis' movie talk

The pending global water crisis takes center stage as the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center hosts a 2:45 p.m., July 29 movie talk on the documentary "Last Call of the Oasis." The talk, which follows the 1 p.m. screening of the film, will be led by John Gates, assistant professor of earth and atmospheric sciences.

Gates' movie talk is free and open to the public. Admission to the 1 p.m. screening is at regular Ross prices. Read more about this talk in Today@UNL.

Prairie Schooner announces book prize winners

Prairie Schooner, the national quarterly literary magazine at UNL, has announced the 2012 winners for its annual awards for books of short fiction and poetry. The competition, in its 10th year, selected winners from more than 1,100 submissions from around the world.

The Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction goes to Xhenet Aliu of Athens, Ga., for her manuscript, "Domesticated Wild Things." She will receive a $3,000 prize and publication by the University of Nebraska Press. This year's winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry is Orlando Ricardo Menes of South Bend, Ind., for his manuscript, "Fetish." He also will receive a $3,000 prize and publication by the University of Nebraska Press. Read more about these awards in Today@UNL.

UNL launches Nebraska App

UNL has launched the Nebraska App, a suite of mobile applications that makes essential university resources available on mobile devices. Students can check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. They can access the public directory and get in touch instantly, keep tabs on Husker sports, find places on the campus map, stay informed with the latest campus news, watch videos, and even listen to podcasts of popular lectures in iTunesU.

"UNL is moving services to the where the students are in terms of devices and network access"," said Mark Askren, Chief Information Officer. "Students now have a much more powerful connection to UNL via their mobile device." Read more about Nebraska App in Today@UNL.
